I just started training for a 10k and I am by no means a runner. My hubs bought me a new pair of Nike's that are sweet! Have you guys heard of Nike+? This little "system" is so neat. There's a spot under the insole to put in a Nike pedometer and you wear the bracelet that comes with it and it tracks your progress. It's so neat. There is a whole website set up that tracks your distance and time. You can also join challenges and compete with people all over the world (or so they say).
I'm no runner, but last week, my first week, I ran 10 miles. Yes, my shins are killing me, but 10 miles to start? I think this little set up is pretty motivating. For all of you out there who need a challenge and a little motivation...get in on this.

YOU GO GIRL...!
Being healthy is what's up for the Y2010..! I know I'm enjoying being on my workout kick...I don't do running, my feet are in horrible shape...You do right to start out taking care of your stilts, especially at that distance...
You should buy a $5 speedrope, use it to burn down after your runs...The input you get from that will help you with your conditioning...

Re: Running...or trying to atleast
From my experience it really seems that certain people are made for running distance and certain people for running sprints.
Every now and then I'll play basketball with people who are clearly the long distance running types...and they tire out way before me...even though they're in much better shape...and I just can't understand it.
But then take me....who can play 2-3 hours of competetive up and down basketball (which definitely requires at least over a mile of running)...but I don't even think I could run a mile anymore without like throwing up lol.
So to me...cardio is all about however you can get it in.
If its running 10 miles in a week, more power to you!!! Hell, I'm happy for you, but I know I couldn't do it lol.
But that really is some awesome technology that you're talking about....its a way to keep people motivated and keep it fun for people trying to get in shape...Kudos to Nike!

Re: Running...or trying to atleast
I was running consistently up until about 5 years ago. I was doing 7 miles each run and running 3 times a week with the off days focused on weights. Now the biggest weight I left is my ass out of bed every morning... :p
Actually, I'm just about to start again and am thinking I will be back to somewhere around the 4 miles at a shot mark with one of those miles being split as 1/2 mile walk warm up and 1/2 mile walk cool down...
I'll update you on my progress.
Regarding the technology... I've been curious about the training watches that measure steps, heart rate, and track distance by GPS measurement... Anyone ever use something like this?

Those watches is kind of what this is that I'm doing. Its got to be the Nike+ watch with Nike shoes, but it track distance that you can look down and check anytime, its a watch, it tracks pace, time, etc. Check out the site:

Good luck with your running. I'm jealous at your distance already! I did my first 5k today and it was pretty easy. I'm going to jump from 2 miles a day to 4 miles.
Keep me updated on your progress :D

Re: Running...or trying to atleast
the challenge for me has been that I am a born sprinter. the 200 and the 400 were my favs! so trying to adapt to a distance runner's stride and endurance has always been the challenge.
I don't really like the running... but I like what it does for me.
