Linux Mint 10 “Julia” released!
http://ubuntulook.com/2010/11/14/linux- ... -released/
Of course I was voting for "Jessica" for obvious reasons. All the same, a decent distro. Not sure if I'll switch because I am using Linux Mint 9 - which has support until 2013 since it's a LTS release.

Re: Linux Mint 10 “Julia” released!
Wow, this is so badass! I'm dual booting between Windows 7 and Mint 10. My goal is to completely switch to Mint 10 by the end of the year. Moved my e-mail over to Thunderbird 3.1 from Outlook 2007 in Windows 7. Working on finishing seeding some torrents in Windows so that I can use Deluge client on Mint instead. I'll continue to move all my tasks over.
I highly recommend this for anyone wanting a better solution on their PC. Check out the screenshot of my desktop below.

What is the difference between
Linux Mint 10
Mint Debian
Mint 9 Fluxbox
Linux Mint 10

Yeah Dude, I absolutely wouldn't mind going all Linux just because, but I don't really get the difference in all the builds...Is this build better than say, the Ubuntu build that I'm running..?

Re: Linux Mint 10 “Julia” released!
Different desktop environments. There's the standard Linux Mint 10 (sometimes called Main edition) that uses Gnome. It is based upon Ubuntu and uses the Ubuntu repositories. This version is probably the easiest for a Windows user to switch to.5829 wrote:What is the difference between

Mint Debian is still the old Mint 9 and is more true to Debian. It uses Debian repositories, where all the software/updates are stored. It will look the same as the main version because both are Gnome. It just bypasses anything pertaining to Ubuntu. It's more of a test version.
Mint 9 Fluxbox uses the Fluxbox desktop environment, as opposed to Gnome. It's not very Windows user friendly and doesn't have a "start" menu. Everything comes up from a right click. Some hardcore Linux users tend to prefer it AFAIK.
Most of them are packaged with similar software. The only thing I can advise is that the default CD/DVD burning program is called Brasero and it's a pile of crap. From my experience trying it, if you set the burn speed to say 8X it won't ever burn at that speed. It ranged from burning an entire DVD at 2X to burning an entire DVD at 20X - which is horrible for long term burn quality. I ended up getting Nero Linux 4, which isn't free but I easily found a serial number off of the web. It's basically Nero Burning ROM for Linux and everything works flawlessly.

Re: Linux Mint 10 “Julia” released!
I think I started the topic before, but its definitely time we started a "Welcome to Linux" where n00bs such as myself who want to learn the intricacies of Linux can get some good help...Mint 10 looks like a great place to start...Part of the issue with learning a new OS is just finding the way to do something old on something new, and with a HDD failure or two in my resume, I think its about time I learn to do that effectively...
Once I get Mint going and see if I can find a way to salvage some of my data until I can get my hands on a Windows 7 DVD, I'll be starting that topic pronto...In just using Ubuntu live, I can see how much faster it is than Windows...

Here's a good "Linux for Dummies" from 2009 that might help. Don't worry, I'm in the middle of reading it myself. :silly:

Re: Linux Mint 10 “Julia” released!
I'm having some issues with my Mint 10, which sucks cause I'm actually preferring to use it over my Windows 7 install for most things...
The biggest issue is that for some reason, my Wi-Fi/Ethernet speeds for Linux are abysmal...My download speed is almost 4 Mb/s in Windows 7...I reboot and go into Linux, and its .56 Mb/s...I have tried to sort it using Google and all the fixes, but to no avail...Its a bummer, as being connected and online seems to be a big part of the Linux idea...
The second biggest issue is that I can't hear sound from my speakers...I get sound from my headphones, my mic works...But I don't have any sound coming through my speakers...And again, I've followed all the self help tutorials I can find, nothing seems to work...
Two huge issues, but one definitely bigger than the other...Not enough to uninstall it, but I'd definitely have to have this fixed before it could be my full time OS...My PC is over 3 years old, I have relatively common hardware in it, not sure why its an issue...
