There's no need to convert. Almost everything that supports MP3 will support AAC (M4A). Mac, Windows, Linux, home and car audio, etc.

What if I want to turn 320 kbps files into something smaller to fit on a portable device..?

MP3 is already lossy and compressed. It's taking a bad source and making it worse. If you re-encoded from FLAC that might be different.

Unless you own a very, very expensive set of headphones, the difference between a 320 kbps mp3 and a 192 kbps mp3 is about 2-3 MB...More than enough of a reason to own and use a conversion tool...

Size difference is very valid, I concur. But re-encoding a flawed source to another flawed format is not as good as taking it from the original source. It's just going to make the audio worse.

The exception is going from FLAC to MP3/AAC as FLAC is lossless. All the original audio quality is kept.

Which FLAC ripper do you use..? I've never done a FLAC rip before, lack of HDD space... :)

I haven't. I just use MP3 or AAC on my phone. I leave the formats as is. I have a mix of MP3, AAC and FLAC on my hard drives though.
