The number of Android devices that have been activated has doubled in just six months.

That's an even more impressive statement when you realize that six months ago, there were already a whopping 100 million Android activations.

That little nugget of statistical treasure was revealed on Wednesday, where it was understandably overshadowed by the announcement of Google's new digital music platform.

The company also revealed that around 550,000 new Android handsets are being activated every day. That's almost uncharted growth for a software platform that didn't even exist three years ago.

Android is the leading smartphone platform in the world, capturing a majority of the market. Until now, no one has managed to grab more than 50% of smartphone customers since the days when few people understood what "smartphone" actually meant.

My only gripe with Android, besides being a product of Google, is that it looks and functions a LOT like Apple iOS. No wonder Steve Jobs started all those lawsuits. Unfortunately they started them against the tablet and smart phone manufacturers like HTC and Samsung, instead of properly attacking Google.

That's one reason why I like my Windows Phone so much. The Metro UI looks and functions nothing like iOS or Android yet it is seamless and smooth. The Zune interface of Windows Phone is probably one of the best parts.

Apple is like Linux behind bars. It's a severely restricted environment.

Hmmmm, after rejecting iPads at my work they actually want to try out Android tablets. I can only imagine the issues if we bring them in due to how much doctors, nurses, etc beat up our equipment.

No tablet can take abuse like weight on the screen or too many drops. Don't believe me? Go buy a tablet and drop it on non-carpeted floor a few times.
