You mean, there is another country besides the U.S..? /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />
Well red, as a boxing fan, and a real one, my knowledge of the sport is pretty good, I consider the careers of all fighters...But c'mon man..! Darcy died as a kid, you can't be aged 21 years and DEAD, and be considered the best boxer of all time...
Unless you're a 23 year old Mike Tyson, who has died in the ring after knocking out every opponent he ever faced...
I'm very supportive of non us fighters...But most of the European champions and contenders are let downs...I was ready to crown Vladamir and the brothers Klitschko world champs...And Vladmir has gotten his ass beat the last few times out, and the elder brother almost (did) beat Lennox Lewis, but he couldn't stop meat from hanging out of his head...
If the Olympics are a world event, and a respected one, then it is safe to say that I could have solid merit in Choosing the G.O.A.T in boxing by starting with Roy Jones Jr., Cassius Clay (his momma name him Clay, I'ma call him clay, LoL), and then working my way from there....

Okay so Darcy died at an early age. Did you read the list of Pugilists he fought? He fought (and beat) many of the BEST US fighters of the day. Even the American press admitted he was freaking awesome. He was only a middleweight, but who said the best boxer had to be a
Heavyweight? What has weight to do with it?
Oh by the way, how far back are we going in this "debate"? and under what rules? Back in the 1800's there was an Irish pug, I can't remember his name who won many many bareknuckle fights and in those days they really were fights. None of this prissy nancy boy stuff like now days....
The fights were bare Knuckle, had little or no rules and only ended when one competitor died or gave up. The fight I remember reading about went for 150+ rounds (not pussy 3 minute rounds either....)
Deciding who is the best fighter ever, is a loaded question that needs quatifying and qualifying, man! Since the start of recent boxing? Professional boxing? Weight Classes?
Your question is like saying who is the best swimmer ever, Or who is the most beautiful woman ever....VERY subjective.
But if you are talking about the best US boxer ever, you seem to have forgotten a young man from Lafayette in the great state of Alabama...
Remember the Brown Bomber? Joe Louis? Held the World Heavy weight title longer than ANY man in history! Defended his title 25 times and scored 20 KO's in those wins!
Dont get me wrong, Cassius was an awesome boxer, winning many fights and regaining his world title. I believe that his personal life was opened up to the public too much. He lost his privacy and started to believe his own press. Psych warfare gone wrong.
One final point. Sport stars are NOT gods or even neccessarily Hero's, they are atheletes. Young people with finely tuned bodies and great talents. How many sportstars have gotten themselves into deep shit for bad behaviour. Even Michael Jordan showed he was just a man, because he was unfaithfull to his wife and has a gambling problem. Mike Tyson (who is a Fighter NOT a boxer) is a thug. Convicted of Rape and violent crimes, but he was an awe-inspiring punching machine. Scared the shit outa his opponents.... (I wont EVEN go into the Ear gnawing incident)
Please admire sports-stars, dont worship them.
You wanna hero worship someone look to someone who suffered for their beliefs

Well, I'm going on gifts alone...If you can fight, you can just fight...I'm basing my judgement from all the tangents and fundamentals to which I understand a boxer to be...Though I am in no league, I have studied the sport for years, done it, and have more than a breaking idea of what it takes to do the things they do...
I picked Roy Jones Jr., cause he did what no fighter in the history of fighting, did, bareknuckle or not...That was a phenomenal accomplishment, and aside from that, he was so good, that he made other good fighters look bad...
He had his hands behind his back...Popped up, and knocked a guy out...He was blazingly fast, equally powerful, and an adept boxer, good use of combinations, body and head work...Defense...All top notch...
Ali, well, nuff said on that...He was good enough to influence the styles of some of the most accomplished fighters ever, including, but not limited to Bruce Lee, whom many regard as a phenomenal athlete and martial artist...

Boxing!
Ahhhh! Now the truth outs!
You are looking at SHOWMEN not boxers! People who do fancy tricks to please the crowds. Both of the two you mentioned are renowned for their antics and showmenship.
I personally prefer the quiet un-assuming athelete who (to paraphrase a popular motto) "Just Does it" Does the job and does it well, without being a total.....mmmm.... well going over the top in showing off and celebrating. [-X
Have you ever seen the Australia/Russian Boxer Kostya Tszyu? That is what I'm talking about. He is an awesome BOXER, not just a fighter or a showman.

Can I just point out that speed is not everything. What good is speed if you cant hit the target on the "sweet" spot or with any power. Even defence is only part of the package. Being able to take hits and stay on your feet still fighting is important too.
Read this about Kostya vs Zab Judah

Zab Judah is much faster than Kostya but who won? The Thunder from Down Under did! /:D" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt=":D" />/
Kostya's ONLY professional loss was a debacle, a rip off, da fix waz in, and all that....Some people made a lot of money on bets that night, betting against the favorite (Kostya) look at the points for the fight! RIP OFF!

WHOA.....the first heavyweight fight in Chicago since 81' in the rosemont theathre was here at the United Center on (I believe Saturday...might have been Friday) Golota vs Brewster for one of the seemingly endless heavyweight titles. This wasn't even a damn fight........It took Brewster 53 seconds (including 8 for each knockdown get ups) to TKO him in the first round.

QUOTE(The Messiah)Swimming is hard, but it doesn't make the people who compete in it tough.
Youre completely wrong.
If we are talkin tough as in "beat up tough" then yea, swimming doesnt make you tough (even tho that really isnt tough) that way..
But you wanna try doin doubles 4-5 days a week, 2 hours a day, with weights/dryland before afternoon practice, saturday practices, and sunday prac if we screw up on something..thats tough..you feel sorry for yourself one second, your sunk..
Pain tolerance, conditioning, etc kind of tough, not many sports come close..(running, cycling, boxing are a couple)..
But shit, theres maybe only a handful of football, basketball, or baseball players at the high school level (maybe college to) that would beat me running 1,000 sets of lines. And I'd pick that over a swim practice anyday..

*disclaimer*
I am referring to swimmers who are actually worthy of being called that, not the summer league type swimmers that suck. I am referring to regional/national level competitors..

Re: Boxing
Back to Boxing, since we have some big fights coming up this summer and some good fights that came on even recently...
Just watched Gomez/Gatti, with Gatti getting murdered...He retired after the fight...
The best fight though, and proof that the Welterweight division is the best in boxing, was the Williams/Margarito fight...So many good fighters in that division, and now Oscar De La Hoya is talking about coming back...Mayweather, Cotto, Williams, Shane Mosely...Good times ahead, though Floyd is the best fighter alive...Lots of good fighters lurking in that division though...
We also have Winky Wright/Bernard Hopkins coming up on 21 July...Winky is another great fighter, I don't think that Hopkins will even be able to land against him...Winky's so hard to fight, so good defensively...BHop is one of the best of this era, but its Winky's time now...
