No one knows who the shdow is. *He* first appeared on the radio in the 1930's, and he still has a cult-like following.
Legend is:

The shadow was left with no identity, but he could assume the identity of any person he touched with his bare hand for about thirty minutes, he also had telepathy (cause he didn't have a mouth.) and a limited form of thought projection, which he uses as an aura of *emotion* (fear, trust, etc.)
He publicly wears the face of a jet set millionaire who is always away from town.
His greatest asset is his own interconnected worldwide contacts, all of which owe him their lives , or the lives of loved ones. The price of having the shadow save you is conspiracy...
The shadow is one of my favorite heroes, actually... and he would beat Cap's scaly ass anyday.

Yeah, he sounds like he could give Cap much more than he bargained for, and I personally have never thought much of Cap as a hero...Too damn cheesy, really...
