OK...
Why aren't baseball players great athletes..? Cause baseball isn't a full contact sport..? What about athletes that played both sports in college, and then just chose football or basketball..?
I guess what I'm trying to say...Is how come Barry Bonds can't be considered a great athlete..? Mind you, there are physical exceptions in every sport...Do you think that in a discussion of great athletes, I talk about Bo Jackson...Deion Sanders...Michael Jordan...And when I say A-Rod a hush will fall over the room..? A guy gets off his ass and plays 8 straight years without missing a game, and he's not a great athlete..? He wins gold gloves year in and year out...Hits over .300 with 30 HR's...Roger Clemens isn't an athlete...?
Do elaborate, make another topic if you must...But I gotta read this...

I'm with A....

They're great.....baseball players.
Nothing about playing the game of baseball, in my opinion, requires anything other than being able to run fast...chase down balls...and swing a wooden stick.
Theres no extreme physical assertion....except pitchers...but they get a rotation...and most have surgery.
With Hand eye cordination.....and some coniditioning (not a lot...just some, unless you play outfield) it seems like thats all it takes. That to me is why they aren't great athletes.
Roger Clemens is a GREAT pitcher....amazing baseball player....but being able to stand in the same spot...and throw a ball....doesn't make someone a great athlete to me
disagree if you want...its just my opinion

No other sport plays nearly as many games as baseball players. You have to be a great athlete to last that many games. You've gotta have tons of endurance, stamina, and athletic ability to last

Shit L.G...You're writing this stuff, but I swear I don't think that you believe it...We are obviously not going to get anywhere with that definition...
Please tell me what makes football or basketball players athletes then....Cause if we just make the shit as simple as you did, there is no such thing as an athlete...Cause just like you said for baseball, I could say, "There's nothing athletic about being 7' tall and being able to run up and down a court for 40 minutes, catch a ball and put it in a hoop 1 foot from your hand..."
"Theres no extreme physical assertion..."
How do you know what the physical assertion of a professional baseball season is..? I mean, again, based on personal ability, that's shit, but still...That's an opinion with no foundation Homes...
You could say, "Boxers aren't athletes, it don't take a great athlete to stand in the ring and take an ass whipping..."
Hand eye coordination, speed, stamina...Those are important traits in every sport I've played and seen played...How is baseball DIFFERENT..?

Because their the ONLY traits needed in baseball.....all those traits are needed in all other spots...plus many more.
Basketball and Football are contact and team sports....both require better athletes to play.
Running up and down the court for 40 minutes....sure is a lot harder than standing in one spot until the ball comes ur way for an hour.
Not to mention theres contact and elbows going into your side from other players.
Man.....I'd play a basketball game everyday if I didn't have to run more than once every 10 minutes and had no contact.
Basketball you gotta actually work to get through defences....get around your defender...grab rebounds against more than one person.
Ayhja....even you know you dont wanna aruge that basketball and football players don't work harder on game day than a baseball player. Action is constant in both.....Baseball is boring as hell to watch..because an AB can take 10 minutes at a time. 10 minute breaks don't happen in basketball or football.
Football you're dodging 9 people...or trying to knock at least 1 on his ass....EVERY PLAY.
Baseball you're sitting in the dugout until 8 other people go between you.
Don't ever try and argue that it takes more endurance to play baseball dude....thats like saying Shuffleboard is harder than a marathon.

You make good points, sure...But the fact still remains that not everyone can play baseball...To me, that's significant that it takes a certain degree of skill not native in every human being...
Baseball is instant...A guy might sit in the batters box for 5 minutes, but if an infielder is not alert, he can be hurt or killed by a baseball coming towards his head at Mach 4...No other sport I can think of requires that kind of reaction time and command...He has to track the shit, catch the shit, jump into the air and dodge the guy sliding at his legs, and throw the ball with zip to first base...
Warren Sapp is a tremendous football player and athlete, but he couldn't play SS for the Yankees...Drew Henson is a professional NFL QB, and couldn't make it in the major leagues...
You need strength to play baseball...No weak ass will hit homeruns...It is not enough to just hit the ball, you have to know how to place the ball where the defense is not...In less than a second....
Endurance is position based, like in all sports...You might not need that much endurance playing Right Field, but you certainly need it to throw a complete game...An NFL QB doesn't have to throw +100 times a game...They play once a week...Even if they pitch every 4 days, a MLB starting pitcher will throw 2 to 3 times more than a starting NFL QB...
Whether or not it's boring is one thing...But baseball has great athletes whether or not you feel every sport that can claim it has great athletes is a contact sport...That's not enough...
The NBA is not a contact sport by nature...You don't get the shit knocked out of you every time down the floor...Boxing, is a contact sport...Football is a collision sport, not nearly the same thing...You don't make it in any sport of a long time without being conditioned...

well about QB's.....they gotta throw something...6 times as large...and they have the pressure of if they dont throw it in a couple seconds...they'll get mauled by this huge DT.
Sure....Warren Sapp can't play baseball
but NO baseball player can play DT in the NFL.

Hmm...Not sure where you're going with the larger object deal, it is probably harder to throw a 90 mph curveball than it is to complete a quick slant, definitely easier if you have Hines Ward on the other end of it...
Anyway...
Your take...Is that...Roger Clemens couldn't play QB in the NFL..? John Elway played both sports in college, and was good at both...He chose football...Superbowl and Hall of Fame career in tact...And Elway was a DAMN good athlete...
L.G., there are great athletes in MLB...Sorry man, that's just the way it is...If you look at the careers of cross over athletes, as that is only comparison we have, all of them were better players of the other sport..Bo...Deion...
Tony Gwynn, yes, fat chubby Tony Gwynn was the best hitter of our era...Did you Know: He was an NBA draft pick, and the all time assist leader at San Diego State...

I don't get your arguement with that.....All you're telling me is that a lot of athletes who are better at other sports...can play professional baseball too.....that's only proving my point.
