A solider petting a cat shows what good we're doing over there?

Excuse me for being ignorant...because I probably am uninformed....but, we got Saddam....We've instilled democracy.....why am I still hearing American solider's names being read on the radio or on the news because they died......Why are we still over there?

We have hundreds of pictures from when my husband was there (most of you remember that). I would say about half of them the media would never show. There is even some of the guys taking "combat craps" which are so funny and yet so scary.

Isnt that propaganda? When they only show you what they want you to see so that they can control what we believe is happening?

Not the cat pic..but the pics of the soldiers with the kids. It shows that we aren't hated by everyone over there
"If there were no eternal consciousness in a man, if at the bottom of everything there were only a wild ferment, a power that twisting in dark passions produced everything great or inconsequential; if an unfathomable insatiable emptiness lay hid beneath everything, what would life be but despair?"

no, it reveals two things.

A. They have kittens in Iraq. Most people don't realize that.

B. Soldiers seek comfort and comraderie on the field. They are human and vulnerable, and yet still they persevere as they serve.

QUOTEExcuse me for being ignorant...because I probably am uninformed....but, we got Saddam....We've instilled democracy.....why am I still hearing American solider's names being read on the radio or on the news because they died......Why are we still over there?

Because the Sunni (most iraqiis fighting allied forces are sunni) want to kill off the kurds, and have tried since the '60s, and at times enacted attempts of genocide or forced migration. The Kurds want to hold the Shiite and Sunni for their crimes against them since 700 AD, and the Shiite want to make sure regardless everyone stays under a Muslim or social behavior and restrictions. And more than one Iraqii in power has a history of betrayal, and yet was elected to power.

And we started pulling out of Afghanistan because of pressure from the media and anti-war sentiments, and already a new Taliban has arisen with more weapons financed by Osama Bin laden, and sold by husseins regime - among other countries. Fortunately, less troops are signing up for this new Taliban, but the onse they have already started throwing grenades into market places on saturday and killing Afghani civilians, where no soldiers were even located.

A soilder petting a cat shows that even in moments of despair and fear and war, there are moments of peace and serinity where a life is given importance whether it be that of a cat or a person. Petting the cat to me signifies that even in that war against who ever it is there are moments of happiness that these men and women decide to have. And when there are bullets flying around you and you are surrounded by death and destruction those moments are really hard to find.

Yeah...i know that.

My question wasn't asking what is the point of showing a solider petting a cat...I'm not stupid, I understood it.

My question was how does that say anything about the "good" we're doing in Iraq.

A soldier getting enough time to bend down and pat a cat, doesnt that say enough.

A cat roaming freely outside and not having to hide from all those grenades and bullets flying around.

It shows that even though there is a war still going on but slowly it is fading away and that lives are being freed from the regime of horror, death and destruction. Thats what the soilders are doing there. They are helping the people rebuild their lives without the fear of another taliban or Sadam coming along and destroying their homes and killing their families. They are providing the people of that land with the assurance that everything will be better soon. They are giving hope to the people
