nog, it is indeed cgi, but quite an impressive implementation of the artform I would have to say.
I was in doubt until the shot where the appendage lowers from the body of the one organism like a chain with an anchor from a large boat. There would have been no place for that mass in the main body of the thing. That and trying to imagine the forces of natural selection that would have resulted on the propagation of non-seeing eyes that blinked.
Still very cool interweaving of cgi and real video I thought; and the motion of the things was very "life-like"
