I am hoping to build my new computer as my Christmas gift to myself...I can't wait for Summer 06 I don't think, I need to get this puppy underway...The goal is to build a revision of my current system, which has lasted me well for the past 4 years or so...It has been stable, powerful...And fully featured...The new system needs to have that same kind of longevity, and be equally potent at handling any task I throw at it...
So far, the only thing that I have that I'm definitely going to get is the CPU...I'm 95% sure of that...I'm currently shopping for a Mobo...I hope that other hardware whores that browse the forums can add suggestions to...As I make progress in my research, I trust you folk to throw in some logic and reasoning here and there....I have entred a new phase, And shall retire my current computer (Named Ra) to homeserver duty, and enter the era of the new, which I shall name:
Achilles
CPU
AMD Opteron 165 [1.8 GHz - 1024KB - ERP $325]
______________________
Motherboard
Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe [ Dual SLI - nForce 4 - ERP $219]
Unless something else comes along, I think that I'm going with this one...Stable, fast...Fully featured from a company with an excellent reputation for making an excellent product...

RAM
______________________
HDD(s)
5 Hitachi Deskstar 7K500 [500 GB - 7200 RPM - 16MB Cache - SATA II]
Bigger, better, and faster than anything else...Perfect 2 Terrabytes for a porn whore like me...Same config that I have now, except I'm stacking one up front, and possibly something smaller to hold the windows partition...

Very sad.. a christmas gift to yourself.. Oh well..
What exactly would the computers MAIN task be..? I did read that it is to replace your current system, but WTF does it do..
Oh, and for HDD, I'd go with 400GB SATAII Western Digital if I were you.. I was considering that drive also, however, my next door neighbour might give me his for free 8)
And PLEASE, for God's sakes, don't bring that ATI All-In-Wonder card over..
Go get a DVICO HDTV PCI card..

Ty, rethink the name. Achilles is not the name you want for a mission critical system.
read yo mythology.
read yo mythology.

QUOTEVery sad.. a christmas gift to yourself.. Oh well..
I have a wife and child...Including my mouse, I have made a purchase for my sole benefit maybe three times this year...I had to buy another Playstation controller because my son ate the other...And I bought a spindle of blank DVD's...I haven't bought myself any new clothes, shoes, or spoils in 2 years...You wait until you get a family, you'll see what I mean...This is necessary for my sanity...So yes, it IS sad...LoL...
QUOTEWhat exactly would the computers MAIN task be..? I did read that it is to replace your current system, but WTF does it do..
I encode movies and audio, serve them as well as other files to the wife's PC as well as ra.ayhja.com, I game on it, work with Adobe, of course you know I use RAR tons...Pretty much any task you can think of I've done, or prone to do...I need a 4x4 if you can catch my drift...It needs to be sturdy, have some weight on it, but be able to weave in and out of traffic on the highway as well as take it off road...If my current machine is an H2, I want to build a full fledged HumVee...
QUOTEOh, and for HDD, I'd go with 400GB SATAII Western Digital if I were you..
No, I'll be going with 4 of the 500 GB Hitachi drives, that are currently second to none...I haven't put that on the list just yet, but I'm pretty sure of that...I just can't decide what I want up front, as I'd like to keep my Windows drive seperate of my storage and activity drives, as it is now...I'm thinking about maybe a couple of IDE RAID 0 Raptors on the front line to handle those duties...
QUOTEAnd PLEASE, for God's sakes, don't bring that ATI All-In-Wonder
LmAo...I am headed towards the dual SLI path...I will more than likely go the route you suggest, and just use a PCI add in card...As I said, I want something that will beast through anything I want to do, and that includes Battlefield 2 at 1280 x 1024...
@ raum
Achilles was that dude, undefeated in battle and blessed by the Gods...Paris just got lucky... /tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> It is adequate, because although the machine will have a weakness, it will hell and high water to find it...Pay no mind to all that gay shit that they said was going on in them Greek days... /laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Actually, wouldn't Amun-Ra suffice, since Ra is the egyptian sun god, and Amun-Ra is the:-
Ah, go research it yourself..
Those 4 500GB Hitatchi hard drives do sound much better than my idea.. keep those..
SLI eh? I though't you'd be a CrossFire man.. well, great minds think alike, as they say..
I'd stick with either a 6800GT, or 7800GT, dunno about the new 7800SE's though, I'll read up on them and get back to ya
If you want BF2 at 1280x1024, then the above models should work perfectly..! My SLI setup of 2 XFX 6600GTs canm run HL2 and CSS at 1280x1024 with 16xAA and 16x"the other one", without dropping a frame (however, I have to admit I'm sorta cheating.. VSync is enabled..)

Oh definitely...I am currently shopping PSU's, but my first notion is to go with Antec, as I already have a 550 W True Power, and have loved it dearly...
