First of all, the biggest reason for meditation is it takes stress off dreaming.

Dreams are what governed by what is called circadian rhythms. Simply, this means it is a biological process allowing for more activity than a daily cycle.

When you sleep is the only time you dream, right?> WRONG.
You can sleep without ever having your brain produce seratonin (the dream drug), and you can learn to produce (or use chemicals to force your body to produce) seratonin without ever dreaming.

Until recently, it was imagined Dreams were symbols, what it actually is, is the "storing" of data and relaxation of the body and the brain. Everytime you enjoy 15 minutes of pure meditation (usually you can get to this point in three months) this allows for a "conscious" circadian delta state, and simple breathing exercises can allow for the production of seratonin. Given time, you can even learn to do this while you are in a full cycle of activity.

"Where you go when you dream" really depends on "where you are capable of going," for things are all based on your ability to "swim through the river of dreams" if you will. Some can barely tead water, others seem as though they are born to do it. Some can tread fast but lack endurance, others are like speedboats with an inhaustible fuel supply.
And like all activities, you can increase your performance by practice and exercise, but that can not take the place of raw talent. Also, don't forget, overextension can be dangerous, or even crippling.

If you "invite" *messages* to come in through your dream-time, they will certainly find their way easier, and you have more control over who "comes a-callin". If you feel you are being pursued or harrassed, a good reinforcement of your PERSONAL boundaries can often make a world of difference in your ability to get a good night sleep.

Some of my dreams are things I've had on my mind recently. Some of them may be thoughts I had when I was very little, either happy or sad. My mother remembers me smiling while sleeping, I was thinking of something funny that I remembered from a funny (haha kind) dream I had when I was little. Some of them may be repressed thoughts. Some of them are insights about the future. Some of them are just normal things combined in a very strange way. Some of them are like a movie that I am watching, I don't mean I dream of watching an odd movie on TV, but as if my eyes are a film camera. Some of them seem real, but are like they exist on a parallel universe. Some dreams are from fears of things. Some dreams I forget immediately as I wake up. Some dreams I remember to this day in clear detail.

Alot of my dreams happen after my "heavy sleep" mode, usually an hour or so before I wake up. Or I'll fall asleep after waking up in the morning, and have a dream. They all feel like they happen for eternity (or just a VERY long time), but in reality they only occur for 20 minutes or so. I know this for a fact, because once I woke at 7am, fell asleep, had a dream, and woke up again when the dream was over, at 7:25am.
