I absolutely love star wars. I've read a lot of the extended universe novels which I've checked out from the library and I own a bunch too. I didn't know about a lot of the backstory though .. thanks raum.

As for the movies .. I'm waiting until they release a HUGE dvd box set with all the movies so I can buy em all at once.

Am i the only one who was not offended by Jar-jar? He was not just "funny".. his language had FUCKING AMAZING syntax based on final exasperations... which are the means by which a amphibian can actually survive in water... and bi-syllabic words were consistent as a means of identifiers such as Proper Nouns. and thus he automatically renders his english the same way, which makes it sing-song. It was a dialectical issue that even Tolkein would have admired.
The prominent "islander" sounding issuance of their native language, and their englished words indicated the size of the lungs an amphibius being would actually have breathing through thick humidity. the way his body strained to produce sounds not inherently phonemic (such a "K" and "b") to the languages of naboo was very well detailed, and caused his voice to have three distinct tones, which made his words almost sound like he was crying or whining. His skittish nature was a result of a overly "reptilian" brain well indicated in the shape of his cranium, his ears were lopped to prevent infection from high humidity, and thin to prevent air-borne sound from deafening him, as his hearing was also effective underwater. and his easy going nature was due to his lack of the necessary brain growth in specific areas. His loose gait when he walked was anatomically sound of a creature that would have lubricated joints holdings its limbs in place, while allowing easy passage through water.
Like it or not, and EVEN if you think it was silly: Jar-Jar is one of the most realistic aliens in the Star wars universe. He was legit, and it was not in his actual nature and anatomy that he was rediculous, but only by his imitation of the standard of the Humans he was surrounded by. From what we know of linguistics and amphibians, and neurology, Jar-Jar could be as real an alien trying to fit into a society heavily influenced by humans, in consideration of the aquatic factors present in his native ecosystem.

Yes, I'm afriad so...
His being in the movie added absolutely nothing to the story...He should not have been any further than after they left the Gungan city...The Jedi were to already pick up a sidekick, Jar Jar was there for comic relief, and didn't provide any...Sad waste of screen time...

I didn't feel he was there for comic relief at all. I just got a xenological study of his planet and mannerism, and it made perfect sense.
the *people* in the movie ridiculed him in the movie because they humanized him, while his traits were native to their own environment.
I didn't think he was funny, but I didn't think he was trying to be, either. It is not liike lucas to throw in a lead support character for comic relief. Every character has their comedic traits in his style.
Now what pissed me off BIGTIME was that he got it in his head that Anakin built C3P0. That was some rank shit.
(and i did not like the bug Waddo that owned Anakin and his mother. he was atrociously developed.)

There was no indication in the original books or movies whatsoever, that c3po and r2 were anything but standard UNITS (one protocol and interpretation, one astrogation and mechanics) of a general assembly line of parts, and that is exactly what they originally reflected. If you want to believe the dark lord of the Sith would have enough free time to sit and assemble the ones in the other movies or would enforce his protocol droid to be the Galaxy's standard, so be it... I refuse to. Their essence was their unique quality, not their chassis.
The very nature of the two droids was in that they were UN-exceptional. Lucas was inspired by Kurasawa's tales that he decided to have an entire story unfold around and "sort-of" in the perception of these two UN-exceptional servants, who in this space opera happen to be droids.
