The Existence of Multiple Gods

This is a spin off from one of the other threads...

Do you believe in multiple Gods..? Why or why not..?

I personally, because of the way that I think the universe was created, believe in more than one God...But what I call God, I do not call the Universe...I think of the creation of the universe as being the result of a great Catalyst, that is unaware of itself as the Lord of the Universe...

I believe that as a result of the the reaction between the great Catalyst and matter, the universe was born...And just how there was an explosion that birthed the world we live in, I believe the same thing is true for the beings we call God...Imagine a piece of Giant rock exploding...Naturally, the biggest chuck of rock would be more powerful...And there would be smaller, and almost to the point of being insignifcant fragments, but they would still be part of that same rock by all means...

I believe humans are fragments of the same kinds of species that make up Gods...But Gods are 'bigger' and more powerful, and more like 'the source' so to speak...

There must be a reason why all the ancient civilizations had a panel of Gods...Why the bible has a plural name of God, rather than a singular one...People had to be coaxed into the idea of one God...

Granted, there may be one God that rules this planet...But I think it' be hard, if not illogical to believe that there may be other life in the universe, but they are all governed by the same awesome being...

People fight over who should be the one God, one nominates this person, one says it should be that one- all in the one religion!

So they set up the idea of multiple Gods who rule over different things, a compromise (I don't mean it that harshly).

In Buddhism (well, watching the show Monkey- which IS based on a true story..), there are many Gods with a chief God, but they are all under Buddha- and Buddha resides in all people.

Very cool.Im gonna have to chew on this a bit and get back but two quick things.First i dont see the point in believing in god and then limeting his powers.What kind of a wimpy god is that and how could we ever know where those limets are.Also I agree with you on life some where else, take a look at the pic and try and tell me it dosn't exist out there.Except for the dots with sharp lines going through them all the rest are galaxies.

This is a touchy one...If we r all part of the Creator, then there must be multiple gods...I believe in other life forms and multiple levels of existence....Mother Earth is just a pit stop...So whatever is after this is just the next level of progression... I do, however, believe in the Lord of the Universe...There has to a BIG FISH...Or BIG LIGHT, so to speak since KNOWLEDGE=POWER...So the SOURCE is the KING, LORD OF THE UNIVERSE, or whatever you or your beliefs name him...I'll digress more later on this one...

It sounds like the main reason for more than one god so far is that the universe is too big for one god.Not to digress (good one ark) but i was watching a show that said they think theres more than one universe.My question is how big is god? I dont know about gods name being plural.Where can i read up on that?Is it like the son, the father and the holy ghost.Different parts of the same thing

I don't know which ancient civilizations you speak of specifically...but I think a lot of their beliefs came in trying to explain the unexplained...the parallels between science and diety are amazing. With the lack of understanding of science and natural phenomena there were a lot of different explanations, gods, devils spirits, etc.

Anyway, I do believe that there are multiple universes and multiple gods to rule those universes. Not in the sense of Aliens and such because, we are created in the image of God, so I also believe that our form is like God's. That he has a body like ours. I believe in the resurrection that the bible teaches.

I believe in one God. That God created and rules the Universe. Is God the Universe? No...but He created the universe. I forget which rule of archeology states it but there is one somewhere that says to only use what is necessary to explain something. (I dont' think I quite got that but I'll try and find the book I read it in and post it if it doesn't make sense). For example, don't use more then one God to explain something when one God will suffice. One God, being all-powerful and all-knowing, is sufficient to explain the Universe and the concept of a Superior Being

But that's the part that I don't get...We have sufficient enough evidence to believe in the the fact that the big bang happened, mainly being that you can look out into space and see it...

I don't understand the concept of an omnipotent, omniscient God...Makes no sense...To such a being, we would be about as significant to him as flies are to us...Has anyone here ever sat down and studied a fly and its family..? Watched it grow..? Didn't think so...

The bible uses plural forms of words that were eventually changed to things like "Lord" in the bible...And without even looking very hard, you will see that God even "walked" through the Garden of Eden, looking for Adam and Eve...

Now, an all knowing, and all powerful God...Would have known the answer to that question, he would have known what would have happened when he put the tree down in the Garden in the first place, and unless God is damn bored, it ultimately makes no sense for him to even bother with us...Does it..? We've talked about this before, but imagining having a power or extreme gift...Like being able to hit a homerun everytime you stepped to the plate...Think you'd play baseball for 20 years..? And that's not even to quantify God, but if we're gonna keep chunkin' all knowing and all powerful out there, then we may as well say it...

It makes more sense for us to be the creations of very powerful beings indeed, but lets not forget, God made man in his image...And the people of cultures as far back as we can remember, with no geographical proximity whatsoever, believed in multiple Gods, multiple beings of great power...

And the bible speaks of 'angels' that came down and slept with the daughters of man...Now, I know what you're thinking...God punished them and such...But nowhere in the new or the old testament did it say that God created the angels...NOWHERE...So, if he didn't create them, where'd they come from..?

Quite an interesting concept. Something that is shown by hinduism... There are multiple gods each with a certain duty that came from one god; "OM". To me it was always unclear where OM came from and how all gods have qualities that are human like.

They are territorial, possessive, angry, sad, and loving. All qualities that are human like and many gods have sons and daughters. They make mistakes like humans and are as a result punished. I found it strange that gods would involve themselves in battle and in acienct times granted wishes for those who meditated on their name for long periods of time and were unable to see the hidden desires of those powers of these people.

The first human was a part of the god "Bramah "(spelling), born out of him were the first man and woman. From there the whole cycle began...

And Pete ... wasnt Buddha an actual person who was born in india and developed philoshpy which turned to religion rather then the idea of a god as Buddha ?

We are really insignificant compared to Him. But that's really what's so amazing about it. Even though He is omnipotent He cared enough to create a Universe for us. It's hard to imagine love like that but I truly believe that God has that.

I was actually talking to Aemeth about this. I believe that God could walk on the Earth with Adam and Eve because sin hadn't entered the world yet. Man and God still had that connection. The fall of man broke that direct connection so thus God cannot walk on the earth right now with man.

Now I really don't know about the multiple God idea. The only way I can explain that in the Bible would be the Trinity. I really don't see how there could be multiple Gods. All of them would want our praise and to be the "best" God and so there would be huge wars that would ultimately be costly to human life. So I don't know if I buy into the multiple Gods
