As if the articles posted here recently aren't enough, here are a few headlines from CTV's website...

-- Amish community bury fifth school shooting victim
-- Former priest gets 3 years for 47 sex assaults
-- B.C. teacher allegedly assaulted disabled students

Absolutely ridiculous...

Two thoughts...my sister said the other day that she wonderd about bringing up a child in todays world with all the bad news. I said if you lived 100 years ago you would have to deal with all kinds of desease and infections that can be dealt with today. Every period of time has its challenges

As for today..........Does anyone else think that the 24-hour news coverage and soap opera like way that school shootings are coverd has added to and helped creat these events.I know that ratings are everything and if it bleeds it leads but do we need to fill every ones heads with this stuff. Sick people ( however you want to define that ) will always be around but do we need to give them ideas. Has there ever been this many school tragedies.

I don't think so man, this school shooting thing is off the chain...I'm really tired of not being able to find a site willing to post good stories that aren't based on some type of negative human trait...

I agree, highlife, every time period has its trials, but wow...This is just ridiculous....

It's getting crazy. I agree with you A. I want to find a news source that reports what good is going on around the world. I wanna be able to hear that instead of this shit
"If there were no eternal consciousness in a man, if at the bottom of everything there were only a wild ferment, a power that twisting in dark passions produced everything great or inconsequential; if an unfathomable insatiable emptiness lay hid beneath everything, what would life be but despair?"

Soren Kierkegaard

many of the "problems" with today are that there are new rules to follow, not new behavior.

we have a limbo between adult and child that far too many people fall into. there is no clear line. how can you be old enough to have sex, and not old enough to marry, drink or vote?

it makes little sense, but if we lived in a world where at the age of 13 you were adult... nine thousand out of ten thousand unmarried teachers would have had sex with at least one kid. bet on it.

the bad thing is alot of this is self-imposed and reveals, ultimately our "horror" at the sexuality of children is socially contrived. The most important thing is that many people still do not understand the NEED for that social invention, and so they react with complete lunacy.

Remember, in the middle ages a girl of thirteen was considered ready for marriage. This age has been gradually pushed back by society as living conditions have improved and life expectancy has increased. But the 13 year old is still as sexually ready now as she was then. The bigger problem is that she is also much better educated and has a greater understanding of the pleasures that are available.

Animal instincts will always outweigh social mores unless the whole ethos of the childs upbringing has either been directed to - no sex before marriage - which is very difficult these days due to peer pressure, or to - sex is acceptable, but take precautions - a great idea but the social system forbids her to go on the pill and makes it very difficult to buy any other form of contraception. A no-win situation for the poor lass.

Society generally needs to realise that sexual pressure is always there and should react accordingly, creating an environment in which youngsters, with advice and guidance, can explore their sexuality safely and learn how to manage their desires. Then there will be far less incidence of sexual violence because it will become unnecessary.

But, like all these things it will take time, and there will be problems on the way. Whether it's a child or a Society, we all have growing pains!

Actually i was thinking about some thing differant when i wrote my last post. I agree there is a blurred line between child and adulthood these days.Kids through the media are given all kinds of adult ideas from the time they start wathing t.v. and kids on t.v. are made to look and act like adults when there not. Thats a whole other problem. I was thinking about a copycat effect that seems to be taking place. This cant all be a coincidence. When columbine happend and they had that non stop coverage for so many days i just knew more were going to happen. Years ago before cable the news was on from about 4:30 to 6:30 with half hour or hour long shows filling that time. You had to fit all the news into that time frame so each story didnt get more than a minute or two.Now you have all day coverage. How do you fill up that time.Obviosly not with intellegent and informative news becouse your competitors ( the other news channels , the other 500 channels , dvd , games , internet ) would get more attention. If you want ratings you find certain types of stories and play them as much as possible.
...The big three
* natural disaster
* tragedy ...like a school or post office shooting
* powerful man in trouble...if sex is involved you have ratings gold
It just seems to me that when your talking about confused or impresionable people this type of coverage must have an effect.

..jipper......Remember, in the middle ages a girl of thirteen was considered ready for marriage. This age has been gradually pushed back by society as living conditions have improved and life expectancy has increased.

me......Or...the world is now a much more complicated place with much more to learn and many more possibilities for women. You need a lot more time to get all the info to move into adulthood now than you did back when we were in pimative times with not much more to learn than house work and child care.

.jipper....Society generally needs to realise that sexual pressure is always there and should react accordingly, creating an environment in which youngsters, with advice and guidance, can explore their sexuality safely and learn how to manage their desires. Then there will be far less incidence of sexual violence because it will become unnecessary

..me....exploring would suggest you feel that acting upon those desires is nessasary to be able to manage them. Teenage boys dont need to be told to jerk off so what kind of exploring are we talking about.. Also saying there would be less sexual violence sounds like you see rape as an act of passion as opposed to an act of violence which is what it is.Im sure thats not what you meant.
