So, I called this local shop right, to see if they'd grab one of my HDD's and take the data off of it for me...
Now, obviously, this guy couldn't tell that I wasn't your normal customer...He gave me the usual snow over, talking about data transfer and all that...Yadda yadda yadda...How long it would take, yadda yadda yadda...
And then spits out a figure of 'about' $80 bucks...And get this, he wants me to bring my laptop up there, and they recover the files to my laptop...
$80 for a copy paste job..? Are they fucking serious..? I'm figuring, that I can probably buy a machine for cheaper than that, that will allow me to plug a laptop drive into it, to which I could recover files from...
So I guess the real question is, do you guys know of such a device, and more importantly, do you know of any other options I may have, as I am totally new to laptops for the most part...
Laptop HDD Data Recovery...

Why not just hook the HD to an external and do the copy/paste?

Network the two laptops or pull the HDD out of the laptop and hook it up to a USB connector like this: http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/06/30/brando_hooks_up/
If both laptops work and have ethernet connectors it is easier just to hook them up through a router/switch or "patch" network cable (or even a double end usb or firewire cable) and copy your stuff.

Any el cheapo IDE (or SATA - depends on the HDD) to USB adapter will do the trick.
