Brandy sued for $50M in fatal LA crash

LOS ANGELES - The parents of a woman killed in a freeway crash involving Brandy sued the actress-singer for $50 million Tuesday. The wrongful-death suit claims Brandy was driving recklessly when her Land Rover struck the back of a Honda driven by Awatef Aboudihaj, 38, "The Insider" first reported.

"The accident was a terrible tragedy, and Brandy's heart goes out to Awatef Aboudihaj's family," spokesman Allan Mayer said in a statement. "But for legal reasons we cannot comment on this lawsuit."

The suit was filed on behalf of Aboudihaj Ahmed and Labridi Zohra in Los Angeles Superior Court.

It comes a day after the California Highway Patrol recommended Brandy be charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter in the Dec. 30 accident. The city attorney's office is reviewing the case.

Brandy, whose real name is Brandy Norwood, has publicly expressed condolences to the victim's family.

Brandy, 27, was driving on Dec. 30 when traffic slowed and her vehicle hit Aboudihaj's, a CHP report said.

Aboudihaj's car hit another vehicle, slid sideways into the center divider and was then hit by another car, the report said. Aboudihaj, a Los Angeles waitress, died at a hospital from blunt-force injuries, according to the coroner's office.

Brandy, who earned a Grammy in 1999, has made five albums. She began her recording career at 14 and acted for film and television, starring on the sitcom "Moesha" from 1996-2001 and most recently as a judge for NBC's "America's Got Talent."

Can you legally do that..? I mean, my heart goes out to the family, but you have to wonder if putting a price tag on the head of a loved one is plausible...If I were a judge I'd definitely have to consider that fact, and probably rule against it...

Brandy should never want to drive a car again...

What do you think is not legal? Suing for $50 million or suing in general?

Suing someone for death caused by an accident...I mean, if she was trying to run someone over sure, but what's the money about..? Could you sue Joe Schmo in this instance..? Garnish 3/4ths of his minimum wage paycheck for the rest of his natural life until you get 50 million..?

I guess I need to know more details about the accident, but still...Just because you have money, you shouldn't be subject to get raped for making a mistake...I'm sure Brandy feels plenty like shit...And if life stays true to form, it will be years before she recovers...

I don't know man, it could be one thing if Brandy wasn't trying to help with taking care of the damage she's done, but money isn't going to replace that...

50 million couldn't even scratch the surface of what loosing a mother, sister, aunt, girlfriend, or daughter would do to me...Money would be the last thing on my mind....

If she is charged with Misdemeanor, Vehicular Manslaughter, their suit is futile.

But for sure, this is a ill-timed money grab. Only way they'll get it is to try and defame her.

but this is all happening in Los Angeles, so I am not too suprised.

Doesn't this kind of shit happen all the time? I don't know about your neck of the woods, but where I live there a ton of attorneys that just focus on wrongful death suits like this...

They can sue for whatever they want. That $50 million is most likely for doctors fees, lawyer fees, and then a whole bunch for mental trauma and stuff like that. Most likely, the court will lower the amount, but they can technically sue for whatever

What doctors..? What lawyers..? Shit man, she died...Its sad, but it happens all the time...

Sure, some compensation is necessary, and some should go without saying...But damn, 50 million..? And on top of that, the woman isn't even in the ground good and they are already trying to break bread..?

You can sue for any amount you want for any reason you like. I can sue you for $50M for having a freckle on your face. I won't win, BUT if the publicity for you is bad enough you might decide to pay me off to go away. This is a simple case of "she has money and we want some of it."

But also, like raum said, if she is charged w/a crime is a suit still plausible..? I mean, if someone kills someone, can you sue them on top of them going to jail or being punished..?
