So I've been really giving some serious thought to moving out some time this summer. I won't bore you guys with the reason why. lol

Anyway, since I'm sure most of the guys on here have been out on their own for a while, I thought it'd be good to maybe start a list of items you'd need for when you move out. Broom, towels, shit like that.

I'm a complete narb when it comes to this stuff. lol

You know what dude..? If I were you, I'd only take the things necessary for your day to day activities...I have moved a couple of times in my life...And each time, I've done things the same way...Moving is a big thing, I think its important to get a fresh start man...Take as little shit with you as possible...When I moved this is what I did, literally...

Took as many clothes I could fit into a 30 Gallon trashbag...
Took 4 pairs of shoes...1 pair of running shoes, some casual shoes, semi casual shoes, and a pair of basketball shoes...
I took my favorite book...And something to write with...

When I moved from my apartment last month, I had all of my belongings in 2 of those snap lid containers, a dufflebag with my laptop in it, 2 trashbags, and my briefcase...I lived there for 2 years, and had everything I needed in a single car trip...Meanwhile, wifey had about 9 bins of just clothes...Ridiculous...

So, I'd suggest limiting yourself man, don't just take shit cause its yours...Get the things that are vital to you, leave the rest...What you acquire in your new house will mean just that much more to you, and would be a good way to reevaluate your own life...

Grab you about 2 or 3 of those big storage bins set them on the floor, and pack clothes and shoes in one, personal effects in another, necessities in the last one...

You're a smart, bright young dude, moving out is a big thing for you...Your whole perspective is likely to change, and quite frankly, I'm pretty excited for you...

Hope I've been helpful..!

Being in a new place is a great place to start fresh...Or start anew...Don't burden the move taking a bunch of shit with you from the place you're leaving...

I agree with Ty, there is nothing like a clean slate and new digs to give ya a fresh perspective on where you are and where you are headed in life. You might have a pretty spartan existence at first, but without all the distractions and clutter it will free you up to concentrate on things that matter.

I would highly recommend if you do not already know how to cook, clean and do other household chores that you really start paying attention to things like how your mom makes the bed, what temp to turn the oven on to make a meatloaf, what kind of soap to put in a washing machine vs dishwasher, which end of a vacuum does the sucking, how to clean a toilet and keep it from growing fur etc etc etc. Nothing can turn that fresh start into a deep hole of codependant filth faster than living on your own with no domestic skills.

Between now and when ya make the move, every time you go out to eat at a restaraunt with real silverwear, try to nick an extra place setting. Probably best to just buy flatwear and glasses unless you have a garment with really big pockets. Eating off of paper plates with plastic sporks will not impress your guests.

Good luck and godspeed!

^^^^ Good advice from Both (most of it) ^^^^

I am assuming that you are living with the parents. Every time you move you lose stuff to the same place that left socks go to. Ask the parents if you can put things you really want to keep and protect in storage there. If they are cool with it you can be sure your important stuff will always be safe and if you ever want it you know where it is.

Once you are on your own, discover the Dollar Store! If all your dishes come from the dollar store and you decide not to wash them for a few months you can just toss them and start over really cheep. You should get at least two nice plates, glasses, forks and knives for entertianing a date. Remember to shove the dirty underware ALL the way under the couch before she gets there and change you computer wallpaper from the naked chic to some cute furry animal. (she'll think you have a soft side and it might help you get some)

Good Luck!

AYHJA... I'll definitely be going through my shit and tossing a bunch. I think I have about two drawers that are just filled with shit. My stereo and disc man will both be going. The speakers on the stereo are shot, and the disc man doesn't work. I'll be keeping both of my TVs, though. For some reason I can't fall asleep without watching TV first. I'll probably put the 13" in the bedroom, and the 20" in the living room.

I'll probably end up going through all of my magazines, as well. I'll keep most of the current events magazines because I like to stay up-to-date, but everything else will be trash.

E... Dude, you don't have to worry about my place being clean. I won't go so far as to call myself a clean freak, but I like a neat house. I get a headache when I go into the kitchen and see coffee stains left on the counter. lol

Also, my mom is supposed to be working on a cookbook for me, not sure how far along she is, though. Cooking is definitely something I'll need to learn... otherwise it'll be hot dogs and KD every night. lol

High... I'll definitely be buying my dishes at the dollar store. No sense wasting $10-$20 on a nice glass set when I can buy four glasses at the dollar story for $5. Eventually I probably will spring for a nicer set for when I do have company, but right now I don't really care. lol

All that being said, what I was originally looking for is things that I'll need for my apartment. I have a bunch of kitchen stuff like cooking spoons, spice containers, hand towels etc. However, what I don't have for the kitchen are things like pots and pans and baking sheets etc.

I'm trying to figure out what I'll need so that I can start to budget myself.

The items that I have right now are as follows:

Futon for the living room
Cheap coffee table
Small bookcase
Box spring and mattress
Pots and pans
Dishes
Towels
Broom

Damn dude, I'm really happy for you, lol...I get the sense that this move could really be helpful to you...

That little list you put together just then looks good to me...The rest of that stuff I'd get on my own..Its so hard to look at all my shit and leave it...Every time I go to my mothers house, I want to take something and bring it here, lol...

So, that's why I just took what I needed to survive, and then slowly but surely got the rest as time progresses...If you'll have transportation, that's the way to go...You'll be trimming the fat from your life, learning how to live again...

Exciting times...

I just thought of this idea...

I was planning on buying a bigger box spring and mattress before I moved out. Right now my skinny ass is sleeping on a single.

Then I got thinking. What if I waited until after I moved out to buy the box spring and mattress. I can just through my single on the floor, no worries. A few weeks to a month after I move out I buy a double box spring and a single mattress. Throw the box spring on the floor, the two singles on top, and throw a sheet on.

Has anyone ever tried that before? Is it comfortable?

Course I don't know shit about mattresses, either. lol Do two singles add up to a double, and how big is a double? lol

Man, I've slept on worse, lol...Quite frankly, I just like to keep shit as gutter as possible...When I first went to college, we were three deep in a room that could barely hold bunkbeds...Shit, my roommate from Iowa go to school 2 weeks early, and the dorm we lived in didn't even have electricity while he was there...He was doing pushups and lighting candles like he was in prison, lol...I took a bunch of my shit to college with me, and a bunch of shit got stolen...I...Learned my lesson the hard way...

Gangsta shit...

And beds...As far as I know, a single is also known as a twin...

A double is the same as a twin and a half, or then called a full size...
A queen is a full and a half, and a king is just bigger than a muhfucker, lol...

Roughly, of course... /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
