Inebriated or Insulin Shock..?

Redwood City, CA (AP) -- The reigning Mr. Universe was
sprayed with Mace and wrestled to the ground by police officers,
who mistakenly believed he was intoxicated when the diabetic
bodybuilder actually was going through insulin shock.

Burns, who was trying a new diabetes drug that night, said he was
preparing to see a film when he felt dizziness and poor vision -- a
sign of low blood sugar -- and hurried to a snack counter.

During the scuffle, the officers did not notice Burns' Medic Alert bracelet.
An on-scene medical test later confirmed that Burns had low blood sugar
during the incident, Cessina said.

This is pretty messed up. They need to be more observant. They should have seen that medical bracelet on his arm
"If there were no eternal consciousness in a man, if at the bottom of everything there were only a wild ferment, a power that twisting in dark passions produced everything great or inconsequential; if an unfathomable insatiable emptiness lay hid beneath everything, what would life be but despair?"

If you've ever been around someone who is diabetic, its so clearly not like being drunk it don't even make no sense...Not a single cop even thought to see if he smelled like a bar...I wish I could read more stories about the good they do, seems like all I ever read about is them making bonehead ass calls...

It's what makes for good news.... but I agree with you. I want to hear about when the cops do something right for Christs sake.

The cops really need to be more careful... but I can sorta understand why they weren't willing to just go up and ask him nicely (he's freaking huge!).

QUOTEassumed a fighting stance and it took four officers to restrain him.Something doesn't sound right here. If you have diabetes you know enough to tell people how to help you. If you are so far gone that you are stumbling around and can't explain what you need, it wouldn't take four people to take you down. The whole story doesn't sit right with me.

Yes, I know who it is, but I am only 5'6" and when I worked security at a hospital in my younger days I had to take down people who were much bigger then myself. A guy who's blood sugar is so low he can't explain what's wrong is easy to bring down.

However, I would expect that the officers had the same fear that you are projecting. "This guy is BIG! I'm not taking him alone." I expect that they used four officers from the start even if one or two would have been plenty just because of his size.
