State police have confirmed that one of two men wanted for shooting two New York City police officers has been caught in Monroe County.
Dozens of state and local police cars blocked off a section of Interstate 80 near the I-380 split just after 6 p.m. Witnesses said dozens of officers fanned out with guns drawn and headed toward a wooded area.
Newswatch 16 has confirmed that Dexter Bostic was taken into custody. There is no word on the whereabouts of suspect Robert Ellis.
Police considered the two men armed and dangerous and a $64,000 reward has been offered for information that leads to their arrest. There is no word if a tip led police to the area along Interstate 80 where Bostic was arrested.
Stroud Area Regional Police officers were joined by state and New York City police in the manhunt. They handed out flyers all day Wednesday in the hope of tracking down the men wanted for the shootings in Brooklyn.
Investigators said on Monday two officers pulled over a black BMW sport utility vehicle in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn. They believed it had license plates belonging to another car.
When the officers approached the vehicle someone inside started shooting.
Officer Herman Yan, 26, was shot in the chest and left forearm. He has been released from the hospital. Officer Russell Timoshenko, 23, was shot in the face and neck. Doctors said he is in critical condition.
Police spent much of Wednesday searching the area between Frantz Road and Ramble Bush Road near Bartonsville.
"Based on the crime they've committed we're going to consider them armed and dangerous. The last known information we have is there at 4 p.m. on Monday," said Captain William Parrish of the Stroud Area Regional Police.
A third suspect in the shooting was arrested Monday.
Some residents along Ramble Bush Road found their street blocked by a police car and were unaware of the manhunt.
"Oh, I didn't know," said Tanya Willis, adding she will be more alert. "Yes, definitely more alert. It's very concerning. I have children."
Another resident found out about the manhunt when police handed him a flyer with the pictures of the suspects. "I didn't see anybody around but since I was alerted I've been kind of looking off my deck and everything all day, which I'm sure other people have been doing. Obviously it's good to get the word out," said John Heller.
"It made me come home and lock the car because we usually don't but now I"m not taking a chance," said neighbor Wendy Squindos.
Anyone with information about the two suspects is asked to call 911.
This is going on about 2 miles from my house. My wife is a daycare teacher and they are on "Lock-Down" in other words, the kids can't play outside and the doors must be locked and only opened for parents the school can identify. The state police barracks where Bostic was held is within walking distance of my house.
And I moved to the Poconos for the peace and quiet. :?
