Cat Avoids Blaze by Hiding in Couch
WEST ORANGE, N.J. — A New Jersey cat may have only eight lives left after it survived a house fire by hiding in the couch.
Firefighters initially thought the feline, who belonged to one of the tenants in the two-story house, had been killed by flames and smoke Saturday night. But after putting out the blaze and surveying the damage, they found the cat wedged into the couch.
"To our amazement, it had survived," Fire Chief Peter Smeraldo told The Star-Ledger of Newark. "They should change that cat's name to Lucky."
No one was injured, and the cat's owner, who was ecstatic to have the animal back, took the cat to stay at a relative's house.

Man Arrested for Castrating Ex's Cat
EUGENE, Ore. — A man who was frustrated with his ex-girlfriend took his anger out on her cat by castrating it with a box cutter, Eugene police said. erry Caswell, 31, was arrested and charged with multiple counts stemming from the incident.
Caswell was angry at his ex-girlfriend for not coming to his house Friday night. So Caswell drugged her cat "Romeo" with human medication and then castrated it with a box cutter.
The cat was transported to the Springfield Emergency Veterinary Hospital and is expected to recover.
Police found that Caswell was a convicted felon and that he had multiple firearms and body armor in his home, which is prohibited for felons under Oregon state law.

Man Charged With Ransoming Mother's Cat
NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. — A man has been charged with extorting more than $20,000 from his elderly mother by repeatedly threatening to kidnap her beloved cat and demanding ransom, police said.
Garry Lamar, 47, was arrested Friday and released on $200 bail. He has been ordered to stay away from his 78-year-old mother, Mary Lamar Grancher.
He started threatening to kidnap his the cat just over a year ago, after his mother kicked him out of her home, accusing him of abuse, North Kingstown Police Sgt. Daniel Ormond said.
"This isn't just a family cat," Ormond said. "She actually called this cat her companion since she lived alone."
During the past year, Lamar allegedly kidnapped the cat once and made kidnapping threats on an almost weekly basis, Ormond said. Police don't believe the cat was harmed but are continuing to investigate.
Grancher made at least two dozen payments totaling more than $20,000 in cash and checks to her son. Authorities are still sorting through her financial records to determine the precise amount.
A phone listing for Lamar couldn't be located. Court officials said Tuesday it was unclear whether he had an attorney.

Cat in Tree Rescued With Hose Blast
YONKERS, N.Y. — A fearful feline that was stuck in a tree for a week, clinging to branches several stories high, was finally blasted to safety with a high-pressure fire hose.
Volunteers with an outstretched sheet made the save as the cat - soaked and hungry but unharmed - was hosed out of the tree by firefighters Sunday night.
"Everyone was cheering," said artist and animal rescuer Greg Speirs, who was among about 50 people assembled beneath the willow tree.
The cat had previously ignored people who banged cans of cat food and climbed ladders that were just out of reach. It took two shots with the hose to do the trick.
"As soon as the cat landed it jumped out and ran into the woods," Speirs said Monday.
"Some kids helped us bring the cat back, and a man said he would adopt the cat right on the spot," Speirs said. "You can't come up with a nicer ending than that."
