The Kobe Chase

The Lakers superstar has not practiced for three days, citing a case of tendinitis in his knee. Some wonder if it's more than a coincidence, coming shortly after L.A. owner Dr. Jerry Buss went public with comments saying he was still open to trading his franchise player.

"Something is going on there," said one Eastern Conference executive who wished to remain anonymous. "It sure looks as if Kobe is trying [to force his way out]."

Gilbert Arenas Out For 3 Months For Surgery

Washington Wizards leading scorer Gilbert Arenas underwent two different surgical procedures on his left knee on Wednesday and will miss about three months.

Arenas had been experiencing swelling and soreness in the knee which he had surgically repaired late last season. After sitting out the past two games, Arenas did not travel with the team to Charlotte and underwent an MRI Wednesday morning, which revealed a cartilage tear.

"I'm just going to sit in my sorrows again. I have three months to [be] back positive again, but right now, it's hard," Arenas said in a posting on his blog Wednesday. "I need to start thinking about longevity in my career instead of just this injury right now. Every great player has missed at least one year."

Team physician Dr. Marc Connell repaired a partial tear of the meniscus and performed microfracture surgery on a non-weight bearing bone on the side of his knee.

"It's not as bad as the injury in April, but it's tough," wrote Arenas, who will begin rehabilitation next week.

The 6-foot-4 Arenas is averaging 22.4 points. The Wizards won both games against struggling Portland and Philadelphia without Arenas and earned their sixth straight victory hours after Arenas went under the knife, outlasting Charlotte 114-111 in overtime Wednesday.

Arenas began the season by playing as though nothing was wrong, averaging about 40 minutes per game. But after Washington's third game, he said his knee felt stiff, "like a 5-pound weight is on it."

He then had excess fluid drained from the knee for the second time in three weeks on Nov. 7. He played the next night, a loss to New Jersey that dropped the Wizards to 0-4, but had a long conversation with Nets star Jason Kidd on the court after the final buzzer. Kidd offered advice about dealing with a return from surgery.

Hawks' Shelden Williams Carjacked at Gunpoint

Atlanta forward Shelden Williams was carjacked at gunpoint Saturday before the Hawks' game against Charlotte.

Douglasville City Police said two suspects were arrested late Saturday afternoon at Arbor Place Mall in Douglas County, near Atlanta. The suspects were in Williams' car and were attempting a robbery, according to an officer who answered the phone at the Douglasville Police Department.

The officer, who declined to give her name, said one suspect was taken to a hospital after suffering dog bites from the police canine unit during the arrest.

Hawks spokesman Arthur Triche says Williams provided police with the license plate number of the vehicle used by the carjackers, leading to a search that led to two suspects being arrested at a mall in Douglas County. Williams' car was found at the scene.

"I'm just glad that he's safe," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said.

"Cars and things like that, jewelry, money, all that can be replaced."

Triche said the car was damaged when found.

Williams entered Saturday night's game against the Charlotte Bobcats as a reserve in the first period.

Williams told Woodson and other team officials about the incident when he reported for the game. He said the car was stolen outside a barber shop.

Williams declined comment to The Associated Press.

Fulton County Police spokesman Gary Syblis said Williams was driving a 2008 Chrysler.

Syblis said Williams, a second-year player from Duke, did not identify himself as a player for the Hawks.

Syblis says the incident occured outside a barber shop on Cascade Road.

The incident is only the latest in a series of attacks on professional athletes. Washington Redskins star Sean Taylor was shot and killed at his home in what is believed to have been a botched burglary.

Earlier this month, Indiana Pacers guard Jamaal Tinsley and his entourage were shot at in a parking lot outside a five-star hotel in Indianapolis.

Damn....I wouldn't want to be a professional athlete right now...

This personally sucked for me in innumeral ways, but what hurt the most was in my first season of participating in 'Fantasy Basketball', and after luckily garnering the first pick in my league, I unwittingly threw out my choice for 'Agent Zero', then dropped him like a bad habit less than a month into the season. Bummsville. :disappoint:

Haha...I know what you mean. I didn't draft Arenas but my friend did and was totally pissed when he got hurt. I've done Fantasy Basketball for 5 years now I think and there is always one person who just completely ruins your season with an injury. The test of a true manager is coming back from that. If you need any help with your team (i.e. which free agents to pick up, whether to do a trade or not) let me know because I do know my stuff...

Thanks for the offering. I mean, just this morning, I went to check my team, and i was seriously considering dropping Damian Wilkins of the Sonics for a waiver pick-up of the Cavs Daniel Gibson, but then my connection petered out, just got back online within the half-hour now, and someone else scooped him up.

As of this moment, I think my team is in good shape, not great due to recent injuries/setbacks, but of all my 13 players in rotation, about half are in the top 40 rank for the season, and none are below rank 100. Up until week four, I was undefeated, but it has become less stable.

Eager to read more on the subject.
