Most likely road to human extinction
Bout time we had a VU poll...
There are some that argue that the human being would have to go through some extremely rough situations to become extinct, and there are some that don't think its possible...Of all the methods listed (feel free to suggest others) which one do you think is the most likely, and the most likely to happen and why..?

The other options were good but I ended up choosing super volcano. Some random ass sleeping giant might bust one day. The other day I read an article on how a super volcano under the antarctic erupted and still shot an 8 miles worth of steam above the ice. That's some crazy shit. I just believe that a super volcano is going to erupt one day and be the cause of other various factors that might wipe us out. Seems like a fun take on it though since I remember watching that Super Volcano movie about the Yellowstone Volcano on Discovery.

I chose NEO Impact because I think the other ones would leave more survivors.

How so..? The eruption of a super volcano would, for lack of a better term, be pretty fucked up...It would kick so much toxic shit into the atmosphere it would be unreal...The rain would be toxic, what's on the ground would be just as fucked, and if I'm not mistaken, there would undoubtedly be some sort of nuclear winter with the blockage of sunlight...How do you see more people surviving in comparison to the other events..?

The Earth's been around 4 billion years. We know that it has been hit by asteroids, and that this has caused mass extinctions. No volcano has caused anything like an extinction event . . . doesn't mean it couldn't happen, just means that it seems less likely.Übermensch wrote:How so..? We've had some very big eruptions, with global climactic effects (Krakatoa, Pinatubo), but even ten times larger-- are they extinction events? I don't think so.
Nuclear war would leave some folks living -- who's going to nuke the Southern Hemisphere?
All plagues have some resistant people, like smallpox, Aids, flu. Lots of people die, but some survive.
Hit by an asteroid, if it were big enough . . . that seems to be the most likely extinction ticket.

Not even the largest eruption of its kind, the Lake Toba eruption 75K years ago plunged the Earth into a volcanic winter, eradicating an estimated 60% of the human population...That's like 10,000 people, 1,000 breeding pairs...The eruption caused a phenomenon known as the Millennial Ice Age that lasted for 1000 years...
A Super volcano event would not only be massive on a singular scale, it will likely have a chain reaction...The Yellowstone volcano goes, and so may go the rest of them...
