Official PS3 Thread

I'm going to inherit a 40GB PS3 soonish. I gather it's the neutered version without backwards compatibility.

Just wondered if anyone here has a PS3. I'm after some game recommendations.

I'll probably install Ubuntu on it as a first step to have it as a proper media box for my TV.

I have one. First game.. I'd recommend Call of Duty 4. Great game. Unreal is okayyy.. the respawn in that game is pretty lame. There have been plenty of times where I spawn, then BAM.. I get blown up. I'm not really into any rpg except Final Fantasy and so those are the only ones I have. I prefer multiplayer games because it just seems to make the game be wroth $60. I reserved a copy of GTA4, coming out in april btw. I downloaded resistance and that's a pretty fun game too. If you get COD4, then PM me and I'll play you online when I'm done with my portfolio.

Also, blu-ray is fucking awesome. I've seen hd-dvd at best buy, and to be honest, I couldn't tell a difference. But the fact that I have HD in my house, it's great. I wish Sony would loosen up and get some damn XXX vids on blu-ray. I wanna see some damn pores in that pubic area.

I don't know if anyone else saw it when I said it, but the format war is FAR from over...And like I said, porn will be the reason...First Sony blew off the porn industry and said it wouldn't release XXX titles, but since the majority of the porn industry already decided to go HD DVD anyway, you can't help but think that this will come back and bite Sony in the ass...

I mean, when I read the figures on how much a porn DVD costs, I was blown away...Could have shit on myself when I realized that despite the high price, people actually BOUGHT the shit...Oh, how we take things for granted here at AF...

I don't think that there is a difference in the quality, and HD DVD's are cheaper to make...The PS3 can only help sales so much...If it were me, I'd probably guy HD DVD all over again, but am happy that I'll be able to have both formats...

But I didn't even THINK about buying an HD DVD porn, I bet that shit would be awesome...Maybe we'll have to start a thread when someone finds one worth buying...

I gotta say I'm not even remotely caring about the inclusion of blu-ray in it since I highly suspect I won't be making much use of it. Not initially at least.

What I am really buzzing about is installing Linux on it and having a "PS3 PC" hooked up to my 1920 x 1080 HDTV. I'll be able to play all my weird format (xvid, x264 etc) movies on it and music. Not to mention also being able to use it to browse the web. I'm seeing it as an easier solution to me building my own entertainment PC right now. Hopefully be able to play any region dvd's via this method as well.

I didn't know about the linux thing. I've never used it and don't know anything about it. But I have a shitload of movies I'd like to put on my ps3 so.. guess it's time to google that.

Ah! Also, if you guys are into this, Target/Super Target is giving a GTA4 Cover for the ps3 if you pre-order it. I don't mind how my ps3 looks right now but I'm a GTA whore so that pre-order is definitely worth it. I went ahead and got the special edition for that safe. I have plenty of things I'd like to store in that and smoke later on.

Thanks for the heads up, Pre-Order shit is the bomb at one of my local stores...If you pre-order DVD's and shit like that, you get movie posters, or those expensive game guides half off...Plus I get 10%...So yeah, I'm going to pre-order my GTA4 as well...

OK so I got my PS3.

On the whole, it's OK but I'm happy I didn't have to pay for it. Let me explain...

Sony is kinda cheap I reckon. I mean this is a 40GB PS3 so it doesn't have backwards compatibility. I had to get an HDMI cable b/c there was only composite (serious WTF???) in the box. Only one controller too. I bought a second controller and it doesn't even come with a USB charging cable. To make matters worse my TV supports 1080p but I can only get the PS3 to work on it in 1080i mode with the HDMI cable. Apparently lotsa people have this problem. Also the PS3 itself looks kinda bad. Shiny plastic went out of style years ago and gathers dust easily.

That said I bought Star Wars Lego Complete Saga and Heavenly Sword. SW is fantastic for co-op fun and Heavenly Sword looks good. Heavenly Sword can be quite frustrating at times tho and can take a few tries on some parts. I'm around half way thru it.

It's made me realise how much I hate using a controller for aiming/shooting games so I'm not going to get COD4 or UT3 for it. Leave those for the PC. Hate driving games as well. If they make Wipeout for the PS3 I'll be all over it but otherwise...

Linux Ubuntu on it has so far been frustrating. It installed but doesn't recognise the ethernet and doesn't shut down properly. Kinda lost interest in it at this stage.

Haven't tried a blu-ray movie in it yet. Might hire one some day.

Overall I remain convinced it wasn't worth buying.
