Web Page / Web Site Design
Hey guys,
I need help with an assignment. I'm doing a paper on Human Computer interaction and have to design a User Interface for a business that is involved in the travel industry. Basically this business will be booking flights, buses, taxis, ships etc for traveling as well as hotels, motels, bed and breakfast etc and also tours.
Now the lecturer has left us as students to decide which medium we intend to design our User Interface in. We are not marked on the functionality but the ease of use of the interface. What I have decided is that the designed software will be directly linked up with the systems of the airlines and hotels etc so that the information for booking etc will be readily available and will be in real time. Which means that if a room is booked in a hotel in California a few minutes before a user gets on this interface and tries to book the same room it will show it as booked.
That is the background of it. However since the assignment is based around the UI and many of you have been dealing with websites for quite longer then me you would know conventions etc that need to be implemented or standards like the ISO standards etc on designing a website for a business purpose.
For example what is the recommended white space requirements? Where should buttons be placed? What should be the recommended scroll down length etc.
If there are any other tips in designing a web page / website I will greatly appreciate it. And oh yeah im doing it in HTML
Cheers.

There are standards for these type of things? If so, I'm afraid that I can't help you. You could try W3C. They seem to have standards for just about anything, most of which I never read.

Re: Web Page / Web Site Design
Thanks to Sanitarium @ VEF for giving me this info for you Deep, and anyone else that needs it..!
---------------------------------------
The key on designing pages is the functionality. A site width viewable for users with 800x600 screen resolution should not be wider than 730 pixels. The main navigation menu should be located at the left side of the page. In this menu should be all the critical info like hotels, flights etc. There should be an extra menu located at the top of the page, under the header image with the rest of the info, like contact, about us, login/register. If we want the page to be 3 columns styled then under the left menu we could post some ad banners. At the right side (column) we could post some announcements or news. And under that we could post some more ad banners. In the main area, the center column we should post the highlights of the site. Maybe an discount offer of some hotels or flight tickets. Some special vacation programs etc.

Oh yeah thanks for the help guys.
And with the getting your web page to come up in google search you can also pay them for it. I m not exactly sure how or how much . But i know that when certain key words are searched the prefered ones that you see on top is the ones that have generally been paid for.
