LOL...
I knew that if anyone would reply to this topic, it would be our resident mariachi...I know I've been talking about doing this for a while, but this would probably be my Christmas present to myself...And no, I'm not going to spend thousands of dollars on a guitar to learn to play...More than likely, I'll be getting on of these:

A Dano '63...

Re: Electric Guitars
Well that looks like a bass guitar, so you're going to buy a bass or a guitar?
(the dano 63 guitar looks pretty much the same but with six strings)
In any case the danoelectric guitars are great and cool, but they're not know as versatile guitars, which style would you be into?

Re: Electric Guitars
Well, I just want to learn to play, I'm not intending to get a Bass, that's just the picture I used...The Dano I had my eye on actually looked a bit different...
When you say versatile, what do you mean...?

Re: Electric Guitars
first of all if you are starting with guitars i recommend you to buy an acoustic (look for one that results comfortable when you hold it)
the advantage of an acoustic is that you can carry it and play at any room of your house instead of an electric where you have to plug it to an amp to listen a decent sound.
acoustic is the best way to improve when you are learning, you are always hearing the real sound so you know if you played the note right and make your fingers used to be in a proper position for a chord without odd sounds.
after you confirm you are into guitar then go and buy an eletric that will result very easy to play since you've spent time learning with the acoustic.
a versatile guitar is one that allows you to play a wide range of styles, that comes from the wood its made out of and the pick ups it has, so a Dano is a very twangy guitar (shinny sound) so for example if you want to play some jazz tunes on that guitar im shure it wont sound very amusing. this would be in the case are not into a specific style.
i personally choose (fender) stratocasters IMO the most versatile and more comfortable designed electric guitar, you can buy a mexican one (pretty good quality) if you are not intented to spend too much money.

Re: Electric Guitars
OK, so if I get an acoustic, do the same principles hold true with electrics, or should any acoustic generally get the job done..? I just so happen to have an amp in my room, which is where I'll be playing most of the time anyway, but I see what you're saying...I should be able to get an acoustic for pretty cheap, or is there a brand you recommend..?

Re: Electric Guitars
yeah a medium cheap acoustic will make it, specially when the learning and save the money to buy a definitive good guitar (either electric/acoustic) when you are ready.
warning: if you are big-handed you'll probably have less difficult with a spanish (classical nylon strings) cause the fretboard is wider rather than a folk (steel/bronze strings)
one of my guitars is this one, and maybe could suit you:

A Fender Gdo200 (chinese made)
it has a comfortable body and a nice&smooth neck/fingerboard, quality of sound and intonation is damn fine and the construction is really good (added the fact i think looks cool). it's about 250 dollars at http://www.guitarcenter.com/Fender-GDO- ... 1175274.gc
something like that or even less expensive could do the trick.

Re: Electric Guitars
I have long, skinny hands...Probably about 8.5 inches from tip to wrist...I'll hit up some local guitar shops and then tell you what I find...Hopefully I can make it by there today...

Re: Electric Guitars
indeed the best thing you can do is that, learn one of two easy chords then go and try it at the shop
