Been really thinking about finding a way to do this...I live in a college town, so there are several WiFi hotspots all over town...I don't mind paying for my own internet, but the prospect of spending what I spend in a month on DSL I can get in one hit with a Cantenna or similar device is beyond tempting...My laptop's internal WiFi is already pretty strong, there are only 5 houses in my little cul de sac and I can pick up about 20 or more various Wi-Fi signals...
My house phone will even work from about a couple hundred feet or so...There is less than 1 mile between me and the nearest free, high speed Wi-Fi source...
I also came across another mods...
Uni Directional WiFi Range Extender
Cheap and pretty easy to do...But this is the one that has my attention...
WiFi biquad dish
I don't have the other tools, but what I DO have, is an old dish that I used to use when I had Direcway...I could modify it, and be damn near unstoppable..! Why..?
I am 4 travel miles from the campus...I don't know physics well enough, but if you check the map, I need only point my new dish directly towards campus, its almost a straight line...I could almost certainly pick up a signal 3 miles away...That previous hack scooped signals from twice as far...Another hack I saw used one of those 10 foot 80's cable dishes...150 miles on that one...But my damn direcway got signals from outer space...I'm thrilled at the possibility...
They have a T1 on campus...Don't know what that means..? I uploaded a 600 MB clip in 15 minutes on a T1...I don't know what the cap is on uploads or downloads...It's just fast...And its FREE...
So, anybody have any experience with doing this that can help me out..? The way may house is, my desk is a foot or less from the upstairs balcony door...We are talking MAYBE 6 feet of cable to have the dish mounted and flowing through my router...
Now that's where it gets a little tricky, I'm not sure how that works, but it doesn't seem hard to figure out...But I'm seriously thinking about getting somebody to build me this thing...

Re: WiFi range extender...
Can you actually get direct line of site with the dish and the uni? Be good if you could. Your speeds would still be limited by the max wireless speed you could obtain - which would not be near T1.
Might be simpler just to get a decent range boosting antenna and piggy back onto whatever free wifi you could. Go to uni for dedicated uploading downloading sessions. Or just hide a mac-mini somewhere on campus and remotely administer it :)

If you mean can I see campus from here, probably not without going on my roof, lol...I don't know what the max wireless speeds are, but I know that when I go on campus for those sessions, I am dizzy from all the shit I can upload...No matter how much stuff I plan to upload, I always finish it before I'm done...I wish I could go there and spend the night, lol...
I will still probably get the cantenna I posted, and work on that sat mod sometime later...

You can make a super-cheap cantenna by just using like a skimmer (or possibly a sieve): http://www.dustydragon.com/wifi.htm

Re: WiFi range extender...
Not super cheap, because you still need to buy the USB adapter, which is like $40 for a good one...So, by the time you get the adaper, the little mod + the extra long USB cable, you'll be out of about 50-55...That's why I settled on the Cantenna, for roughly the same price I'm getting something that's built to handle the elements and doesn't look a hot mess in the process, lol...

T1 is 1.5Mbps up and down. It's guaranteed for it's up time and that's why it costs an arm and a leg.Kumicho wrote:Been really thinking about finding a way to do this...I live in a college town, so there are several WiFi hotspots all over town...I don't mind paying for my own internet, but the prospect of spending what I spend in a month on DSL I can get in one hit with a Cantenna or similar device is beyond tempting...My laptop's internal WiFi is already pretty strong, there are only 5 houses in my little cul de sac and I can pick up about 20 or more various Wi-Fi signals...

The distance will not work for what you are wanting. I understand what you want but it's not possible over that distance.
Have you tried getting a wireless air card?
If any links are down, please send me a PM!

Re: WiFi range extender...
Why do you say not possible j..? In those tests with those guys that made them, they worked with amazing range...What factors would prevent that from working for me..? I'm pretty optimistic because like I said, I have an internal antenna now, there are 5 houses within 100 feet of me, and I easily pick up 20-30 signals from my neighborhood...Grabbing a signal from that far away is iffy sure, but I definitely think it's possible...Campus WiFi is broadcast from a tower I think, as its available from every spot on campus...I'm sure I can't grab it w/a cantenna, but I but that Satellite mod could...
Wireless air card..?

Re: WiFi range extender...
kind of off-topic as usual but perhups some of you would like to know
I have five wifi hotspot nearby my house, two are password free, one has WPA security and was easily cracked, and the other two are WPA2 i could break one of them with a lot of time of working just for educational purposes.
if anyone is intrested in how to: aircrack-ng.org
PS: If it's your own acces point; change the password frequently, use complex password/passphrase and use WPA2 security.

Re: WiFi range extender...
Hmm, I might have to check that out Fap..! I mean, for educational purposes only.... :D
** edit **
Yeah, I think I saw that once before, I remember the hard line 'anti windows' stance they had...I didn't bother to try it after that...I guess it would be OK just for testing, but it seems like too much of a hassle if you have Windows...

Yep, sorry, i forgot to say i used it on GNU/Linux (Ubuntu)
Anyway hope more users realize that GNU/Linux is better in all the possible ways than fucking MS Windows.
