What did you bang on?

Post by Convince Yourself »

So when you were growing up, what did you bang on?

Musically speaking, of course. What instrument did you play? (Even though now that I think of it, the only instrument you can really even bang on is a drum.) Oh well, all instruments are welcome here.

How long did you play, are you still playing? Were you any good and why did you quit (or stick with it)? Did you play classical, rock, jazz...? Were you hardcore and serious or was it just a fling? Did you have a band or try to make it in the industry? How about band camp? On a scale of 1-10 how obnoxious was your instrument?

This is the place where you can tell all those stories that no one wants to hear about the good old days and that great old music you used to play...

I was forced to take piano lessons when I was 6. I hated it and quit after one year. Later, in Jr. High I started playing the trumpet which I loved. Played it through HS; marching band, orchestra, jazz band. In college, I majored in voice, but still played the trumpet for fun, I also picked up the French Horn, and Baritone (Euphonium). I played mostly in the church orchestra. In my last year of grad school, I started teaching myself guitar (6 string acoustic). I wasn't going to be any Jimi Hendrix, but it was relaxing and fun and I was able to use it a bit on my first "career" job (working with kids with retardation in an institution). I hooked up with a friend there at work and also began playing bass guitar. We did a few minor gigs at bookstores and coffee shops (mostly folk music, some Grateful Dead, The Band, etc.) Since moving back down here to Florida, I haven't played much of anything other than my stereo.

As i've said in this forum, I have a passion for music and more specially with guitars, though i love them much more than they love me.
I've played locally with other bands jamming as guest, but i play bassically for me and myself about 3 hours per day.
On style i play candombe, folklore, classical, blues, rock, jazz, tango i mean whatever besides salsa, cumbia or ska.

I play the piano and the alto sax. I love playing the sax...it's so much fun
