LG's Jr. Year Basketball chronicle

#1

Post by Lost Ghost »

So, another year in the community basketball league has started. As expected, our coach for the last 2 years picked up Ryan (a sharpshooting sophomore) and Brandon (a streetballing pointguard senior) and next in line was my twin brother and I...as our team almost won the championship last year, but we were dealt 5 freshmen, on a 10 man team....and that proved to be too much to overcome.

So, this coach of our's, holding some political power on the board, figured he could just trade for Devin and I.....but it turns out the coach that we were given to (we didnt go to the evulation...so they just randomly distribute the players...) has NO upper classmen at all....except my brother and I, and he is unwilling to depart with his two oldest players.

This is interesting....because, it could mean that Devin and I will be the stars...and will be able to carry this team......but now hearing of the other talent on the other teams....victory seems impossible.

What we know is that our coach is a new coach...he's black, his son is a freshmen...and their first round pick was a freshmen......This could turn out one of two ways as well...either they can be ignorant ballhogs who think they're good....or they'll be gracious, willing to learn, and give Devin and I the ball early and often.

I was intinally very frustrated at this whole situation......but I will update again once we have our first practice, so I can give a full breakdown of the team.

I hope maybe a casual reader or two might follow this thread....I plan to be a college level basketball coach, because I have such passion for the game, so this is more my personal journal of what I can work on and tendancies I notice within the team...I'll update for every game....and the noteable practices....

Years past statistics....

Sophomore year........semifinals... I heated up near the end of the season and averaged 18 over the last 4 games...
Freshmen year (summer league)...undefeated champions....I was more of role player here.
Freshmen year (winter league)....semifinals again...I was new in the all-highschool league...so I didn't contribute too much at all.
8th grade (summer league) ..undefeated champions...different team completely......played with some of the best talent I've ever been around...and a player who is currently on the Illinios basketball team.
8th grade (winter league) champions...and I was the league MVP with 24 points a game and 13 rebounds a game...

Hope this thread can be somewhat enjoyed by a few people

I'll be checking you out on a regular, you best believe it...I've already peeped out a few college games this year, my younger cousin' is in his last year at a AA university, I watched him put up 31 last night, and they lost by 1...Fucking free throws...They made them, my cousin's team didn't...

What kills me though, is that nobody teaches the mid-range game...All this fucking streetball shit, and nobody knows how to create space and pull up...Its like nobody knows that on a fast break, you don't have to go to the basket...You can stop, and hit a 10 footer...Our high school coach was old school, and preached those things...For somebody that plays basketball all the time, this shouldn't be an issue...Shoot the long ball, but from 15 on in, that shit needs to be deadly...If your midrange game is sexy, you can get your shout off with a little bit of space...I'm watching dudes trying to do all this crossover, ankle breaking shit...Man, I'd rather get my Larry Bird on...

What's your game LG..? Power, finesse..?

Man, I'll be following this thread LG. I don't play basketball but I love following it. Keep us updated

I've always been tall...and I've always been big...so naturally they put me at center or what not.... That was in the leagues though...I never devoloped an inside game until recently.....My ball playin' ability comes from me being the first person on the block to get a hoop.....so I was constantly playing with kids twice my age and height.....This is where I got my shot.....which was a good thing, but always my tendacny to fade away...a bad thing

Because facing someone sooo much taller and better than you leads you into creating your game around fade-away turnaround jumpers from the outside...I've always been known as the big man with the shot.....recently I've developed inside...and, as I skipped on football this year, I'm super out of shape, so I'll be relying on my inside pound it to people game a lot. Once I get mid season....I'll do like I want. I'm a master with the ball.....if the offense runs through me...the game will be won. I got great court vision.....However, playing with much better people....I always wanted to shoot the ball right when I got it...because I only had it ...like 3 times a game.

Just like last year...all my points came off offensive rebounds.... I hope that with this young team..I'll have the ball in my hands more....

My style is this....I pound and take it on the inside when I get tired...(which will be all the time for the first couple games) but I like to have the ball midrange and be able to create my own shot. My midrange shot is deadly, my twin brother, although out of shape too...is a better 3-point shooter than I am...so we're likely to KILL people if we can find a good point guard who pass it around.

Another thing.....I'm a flat out BAD rebounder for my height...it's mainly because of my younger days...I knew I wasn't gettin the board so I never went up for it....the same is true now...maybe if I work on my intensity going after rebounds the same way I do when I'm backin someone up in the post.......when the game is on the line...I usually get the board..so thats when I know I can turn it on...

This season's goals......

Touch the ball OFTEN...and if that doesn't happen...start demanding the ball...not T.O. style, but "hey...we can win some games if u let me give this team a chance" type.... I'm the type of player who misses the first 3 shots....and at that point..the team stops passin....but I'm likely to hit the next 7 shots or so.

Work on rebounding...

do drills and running at 100%.......I honestly feel if I get in great shape....i could be a really good ball player, I'm such a student of the game and I have the tools nessicary...but I'm lazy and I get tired quickly....

Remember that it's a game....... if I miss a shot....don't get down on myself....no one shoots 100%...hell NBA players are PRAISED if they get half to drop....and no complaining to the ref's.......

Score at least 10 a game.......in this league...with 6 minute quarters....there isn't any 100-103 scores...it's usually in the 40's or if they're some good teams out there the 60's.....but we'll see.

Point........I'm going to do a ton of analysis....much more of the team will be availble when we get our first practice ::sratches head:: that should be pretty soon....

You get rebounds and make shots close to the basket, you will be averaging 20 a game...Easy...

That's a damn good analysis of yourself though, and seems pretty fair...I've only played ball probably once this year...Definitely once that I can remember...The ball felt foreign in my hands man...I have never been the most gifted of athletes, but if you know what you want to do, and then work on doing it, play that shit out like a movie in your head...Man, you can do more than hold your own...It is kind of both a blessing and a curse to not be that athletic, because if you're a pure athlete, you don't think as much...

I am sure that if you use your mind more so than anything else, you'll be just fine, even in times of fatigue...You'll probably peep out opponent tendencies often, which will result in a bit of defense...Playiing down low, you can get a shitload of steals watching body language and stripping the ball...

Man, with your height, if you can crash the boards you're gonna be awesome. Also, just keep your touch soft for offensive rebounds and you'll dominate

Guys I'm only like 6 foot....I'm not that tall....a lot of guards in this league are taller than me....so the "with your height" talk really isn't the case, I'm more fat than tall...thats why I'm playing downlow....no where else to stick me.

I'm waking up at 6:30 tomorrow morning...err today really...to go get that College Hoops 2k6...so I'll be full of strategies and shit for my first practice..

Oh ok....I thought you were taller than 6 foot. I guess I missed that. So even if you're a big guy ("I'm more fat than tall"), you still can dominate down low. I don't know what your jump is like, but it sounds like you can muscle yourself downlow to grab those boards. To me, I think being able to get rebounds is the best. You can either dish them out (def. or off boards) or put it back up (off boards). Great skill to have.

Sure is....I will grab the rebound 100% of the time over someone shorter than me.....and I'll get it like....45% of the time against someone taller.....so I've got a lot of work to do on my rebounding...again it's all about fitness....if I'm in great shape..I won't have any lazy half-assed jumps...I'll be able to get up and grab them.....

My mentality will be different this year. I know I can score pretty much every single time down the court if I focus and play my game....I need to work on my defense...and my hustle...

I found out ahead of time that We have a pretty good player Jondae on the team...hes tall...can jump high...

BUT...hes a primadonna...He was the running back on the sophomore team and he was sooo cocky and for himself it was unbelievable....We have a good relationship because my brother and I were offensive linemen....but hes gonna pretend he doesnt even know us I can tell....oh well

Off to the first practice of the season.... then the team I was supposed to be on with the coach I've had for 3 years in ar ow practices after us....and we're gonna stick around and play with them too.....good chance to catch up with friends...but also a good chance to scout.
