The AF Grammar Thread!

#1

Post by Convince Yourself »

To encourage and promote a better understanding of the basic mechanics necessary for posting, I've created the GRAMMAR THREAD! /laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Seriously, though. Even in The Word, where writing finds its solace, our lovely language is battered and misused. Consequently, I figured a place for a little grammar review couldn't hurt. That and a safe spot to call out people who use the semi-colon as a constant substitute for a comma...

Not that I'm saying perfect grammar is necessary at all times, because that would take away from the charm and essence of being online. It's just that now and then, in the more legnthy and serious posts, it'd be nice to see people gettin their English on. 8)

Bringinger would be swelling with pride; right about now.

Good idea; for a thread: that is.

We need it; badly!

For our first topic, I thought I'd pic the semi-colon.

A semi-colon is used to combine two complete sentences into one thought. Unlike the comma, the semi-colon does NOT serve as a connecter between fragments.

Semi-colon:
"CY told A that grammar is awesome; A agreed with CY."

Comma:
"LG is the greatest ever, though I might be a bit biased."

Wow, is anyone else getting that warm and fuzzy feeling obtained only through the appreciation and discussion of grammar? I know I am!! /:D" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt=":D" />

::Raises Hand:: oh man...I misspell words and use bad grammar constantly....probably becasue I think that on an online forum its more about what the message is and not how its spelled.....but my baby is English crazy....so I'll clean it up!

Aww, thank you! (Were you using bad grammar on purpose again?)

And A, here's your proof:

A:
If I could post every sentence you've ever written that ends in an ellipse, I would.

Raum:
"What would you say those metaphors in Revelations are symbolizing?"

LG:
"that subtle non rhyming line KILLED the whole verse..."

Kramer:
"Frank gathered his troops and set up a semi circle around the vehicles and cave†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¾¢‚¬Å¡‚¢s entrance."

Logic:
"Focus' his thoughts so he can roll over his flaws "

Deepak:
"Someone†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¾¢‚¬Å¡‚¢s closing a deal on the stock exchange
Some one else has just purchased a company online "

Luv:
"So, last night I watched Dick Clark's New Years Rockin Eve like always, except this year it was, well...creepy. "

DD:
"This is my favorite place on line to be, because of the community and rapport we have with each other. "

Rimfire:
"Let me get this straight, because YOU played football with a bunch of zit faced, pre-pubesant high school kids"

Me!:
"It's the trim that kills them- and the insanely low heel for such a tall boot."

And as a note to all the people on this list: I'm on it, too! I know that almost everything above was a momentary lapse in judgement, a typo, or me being extra nit-picky. But A asked for proof, so I tried to include a lot of different people (in the two minutes that I looked, lol). Anyway, I don't really like when people are mad at me, so please don't be. O:) Blame A instead!! /:D" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt=":D" /> And no one really has to read this thread, lol. I just want an excuse to post thousands and thousands of entries devoted to grammar and the English language. Yay!

I too am a grammar nut, but...

I bet I type no less than 12 hours a day...Sometimes...I just don't feel like correcting myself...I look at the mistake, and just say fuck it...They'll know what I mean, LoL...But I do love words, and this reminds me to do the word of the day... /:D" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt=":D" /> Which....You should contribute to on a regular basis...Here is the BBCode format...Copy and paste it in a textpad, and save it...If you log on, and there's no new word up yet, you should be tempted to put one there...

CODE

Pronunciation:

Function:

Etymology:

1:

2:
