Technology and Religion

Simple enough question does advancement in technology actually stray us away from believing in god? Or does it actually bring us closer to beliving in it?

From my prespective god explains what we as people cannot explain on reasoning. God and religion explain what science cannot. Although I do believe that there is a god but does the new inventions and the new discovires that scientists make everyday make us drift away from being part of religion and beliving in god?

It would also be good if we could also discuss the purpose of religion but I feel that it might be too much for just one thread and maybe a new thread for it might be created later on but a basic idea on it is needed for us to answer the question.

So whats everyones prespective on this?

Maybe it is just me being overly who I am...But, I'm not impressed with technology...And I'm not old school either, and anyone that knows me realized that I go to sleep dreaming about 64 Bit computing...But in my eyes...It can't compare to God, and what I feel is the all powerful...What good would a computer be in front of that kind of power and mystery..?

For me they are completely unrelated...I've said it in other threads, I just don't feel we are more advanced than those that came before us...SURE you can fucking play games on your cell phone, watch movies on your PS2 and listen to full 6.1 audio...But necessity is the mother of invention...Whatever people entertained themselves with back in 600 BC, I am sure that it was adequate...And I consider the wonders of the world to be far more impressive than the XBox 360...I would love to have seen the Colossus...The Hanging Gardens...I couldn't honestly couldn't decide if I'd rather live in the world presented in the Lord of the Rings, or the Star Wars Galaxy...

But anyway, back on task...The very idea of God > technology...And religion is its own beast...And completely unrelated to God and technology in my book, at least in the context of a direct influence...

I'm kind of with you Ty. I like having my nice computer and all that, but I think all the technology these days are worse for us and dumbing us. When you look at the Wonders of the World and figure that they were made with bare hands and some basic machines like the pulley system makes you wonder if we really need all the technology.

Technology does nothing for me when it comes to God. I believe there is a God that loves and cares for us, and I don't see how technology can ever stray me from that.

science does not bring us closer, nor does it astray us. god does not explain what we can not through science. science does not explain what we can through god. the two are entirely unrelated and can happily co-exist.

now "God" is a word which is mostly misinterpreted now, thanks to church. it has become too much of an palpable entity. it is too "visual". It is not palpable, not an entity, not visual. you would need to imagine It more as a feeling, an emotion or as something which exists passively and in the background. So, forget "God" has you have been thaught before before you read on.

if It then is only a feeling, what advances in science are there to make one understand "God" better? None. What parts of God are explainable by science? None as well. Both "live" seperate from eachother.

I am having trouble with the question, as it shows how far we are from the real notion of It. It proves that we are extremely dumb (no offense) religiously.

I am having immense doubts about this question, since it sometimes is used to shoot down progression in science; it is used by leaders to warn us about our so-called godlessness. Oh indeed. Their concept of God is lost, not the True one.

Religion is opium for the people. It really is. A pacifier. Such a shame it is such a strong driver still.

I agree on what you guys have said. Normally we use god to explain things that science cannot explain. However when we manage to explain things using technology and science that could only be explained using god does that drag us away from believing in god and having faith in god?

I'm not referring to technology such as computers but technology that would be able to explain how life came to exist. If somehow we could use technology to explain or show that the big bang theory for example was true would it actually take us away from god?

This is what im talking about. I know computers as such wont take us away from believing in god. But the whole concept of god is somewhat used to explain things like life things like soul. When we begin to clone a human or animal for that matter is a soul really instilled into that clone ?

If science could explain how life begins ie how life is instilled into a an egg when fertilisation occurs, would all this stray us away from our faith in god?

Isnt it ironic how logic says we are getting smarter since we keep thinking of better, more efficient ways to do things, but because of these methods we allow ourselves to become intellectually lazy and possibly even become, *dumber* as was mentioned above?

I don't think it is science as such. It is being better educated and more critical. We won't accept things that cannot be explained as easily as we did before. As we understand more things we believe even more things have a scientific explanation. What we used to believe was supernatural is no longer supernatural, and therefore what we do not yet understand should have a scientific explanation as well. It's a logical process.
