†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™¢¢¬‚¦‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦¢‚¬Å“I could transmute the seas, were there enough Mercury.†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬? †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™‚¢‚¢¢¢¬…¡‚¬¢‚¬¦¢¢¬…œ Francis Bacon
The key to understanding alchemy is to realize that alchemical thought is extremely dynamic and takes places on three levels at once: the physical, the psychological, and the spiritual. Thus turning lead into gold meant not only physically changing the base metal into the noble metal, but also transforming base habits and emotions into golden thoughts and feelings, as well as transmuting our dark and ignoble souls into the golden light of spirit. By developing this ability to think and work on all three levels of reality at once (becoming "thrice-greatest"), the alchemists created a spiritual technology that applied not only to their laboratories but also to their own personalities and to their relationships with other people, spirits and entities, and even Gods.
There were three Principle Agents of Alchemy, called Principles:
Mercury †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™‚¢‚¢¢¢¬…¡‚¬¢‚¬¦¢¢¬…œ The Mutable, or Reconciled Agent
Salt †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™‚¢‚¢¢¢¬…¡‚¬¢‚¬¦¢¢¬…œ The Fixed, or Immobile Agent
Sulphur †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™‚¢‚¢¢¢¬…¡‚¬¢‚¬¦¢¢¬…œ The Initiatory, or Cardinal Agent
In Combination, these were symbolized by Three Fountains, A Eagle Lion and Dragon, Three Serpents, or Geometrically as a Triangle. We will address each one of these Three Principles in turn, but the purpose of this instruction is to gain an understanding of Mercury, in the chemical and Philosophical sense. However, it is no coincidence that we address Mercury and The Purpose of Alchemy in the same instruction, for The Philosophical Mercury of Alchemy is its Essence; Transmutation. Beyond any history lesson, chemical reaction, or dangerous fumes, it is a system of Transmutation.
It was believed by the Alchemist that these Three Components formed a Material called the Azoth. The term Azoth is formed first from the first letter of the English, Hebrew, and Greek Alphabets, each being a solid variant of "A". This letter stands for the beginning of All Creation. All of these Alphabets, more of less, have the same beginning letter, but they differ highly in how they end:
The English begins with a †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™¢¢¬‚¦‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦¢‚¬Å“A†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬? and ends in a †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™¢¢¬‚¦‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦¢‚¬Å“Z†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬?
Greek starts with Alpha and ends in Omega
Hebrew begins with Aleph †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™¢¢¬‚¦‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦¢‚¬Å“א†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬? and ends in Tau †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬?ת†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬?
This word, Azoth, symbolizes the Beginning and End of all Creation †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™‚¢‚¢¢¢¬…¡‚¬¢‚¬¦¢¢¬…œ and everything in the middle. The †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™¢¢¬‚¦‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦¢‚¬Å“Alpha and Omega†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬? of the Greek philosophers, the †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™¢¢¬‚¦‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦¢‚¬Å“Aleph†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬? and †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™¢¢¬‚¦‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦¢‚¬Å“Tau†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬? of the Qabalist, the †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™¢¢¬‚¦‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦¢‚¬Å“A to Z†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬? of the Modern Days. Therefore the Azoth is the ultimate, the universal spirit in all created things; called The Holy Guardian Angel. The Alchemists believed that the liquid metal Quicksilver carried the signature of this omnipotent archetypal spirit.
The Metal we call Mercury, called Quicksilver by the ancients, is a liquid metal that could be found in thermometers everywhere. But naturally, it is found weeping through cracks in certain rocks or accumulating in small puddles in mountain grottos. By the Alchemist, it was also obtained by roasting Cinnabar.
Cinnabar is the bright red ore of mercury sulfide. Known as Dragon's Blood, the roasted rocks emit a thick reddish smoke, as pure glistening mercury oozes from cracks. Psychologically, cinnabar represents the hardened habits and terrestrial marriages of soul and spirit that must be broken asunder in the Alchemical Process to free the essences with which the Alchemist intends to work. It is for this reason it is often used for †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™¢¢¬‚¦‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦¢‚¬Å“Opening Ceremonies†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬? in Ceremonial Magic, especially Druidic rites of passage.
The early alchemists would heat quicksilver extracted from Dragon†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¾¢‚¬Å¡‚¢s Blood in a mixture of nitric acid to produce red mercuric oxide by heating quicksilver in a solution of nitric acid, called †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™¢¢¬‚¦‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦¢‚¬Å“Aqua Fortis†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬?, or Hard Water. Egyptian alchemists associated the serpent with the red mercuric oxide. The reaction of quicksilver in nitric acid is impressive. A thick red vapor hovers over the surface and bright red crystals coagulate at the bottom. This striking chemical reaction demonstrated the simultaneous separation of mercury into the Above and the Below reinforced in the Ancient Statement:
†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™¢¢¬‚¦‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦¢‚¬Å“As above, so below.†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬?
Mercury's all-encompassing properties were exhibited in other compounds too. If mercury was heated in a long-necked flask, it oxidized into a highly poisonous white powder (white mercuric oxide) and therapeutic red crystals (red mercuric oxide). This begat the phrase which we still hear this day:
†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™¢¢¬‚¦‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦¢‚¬Å“What does not kill you makes you stronger. †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™¢¢¬‚¦‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦¢‚¬Å“
Calomel (mercury chloride) was a powerful medicine, unless it was directly exposed to light, in which case it became a deadly poison. It is for this reason that Modern alchemy is called †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™¢¢¬‚¦‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦¢‚¬Å“The Black Art†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬? and it is traditional to practice indoors, and secluded from the †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™¢¢¬‚¦‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦¢‚¬Å“Outer Sun.†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬? It has nothing to do with the later notion which arrived that it originated in Al - Kemi, or "From Khem" (i.e. From Egypt). In fact, it was called Chymertrie at the time, not Alchemy. It originated in China (as Nei Dan), and this is well documented.
When mixed with other metals, liquid mercury tended to unite with them and form hardened amalgams. These and other properties convinced alchemists that mercury transcended both the solid and liquid states, both earth and heaven, both life and death. It symbolized Hermes himself, the guide to the Above and Below. It is in this regard, he is called the †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™¢¢¬‚¦‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦¢‚¬Å“Messenger of the Queen of Heaven.†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬?
A balsam is a resinous or waxy semi-solid compound that captures the essence of a liquid medicine or perfume. Earlier alchemists considered the Balsam of the Elements to be the Quintessence, the result of the Conjunction of Alchemical principles. Because of it amalgamating ability, Mercury was considered the balsam of the Planetary Metals. In the Alchemical Tradition, The Moon was regarded as †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™¢¢¬‚¦‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦¢‚¬Å“The Mercury of the Soul†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬?, due to a certain type of mental process that is stimulated by The Phases of the Moon.
It is no coincidence that we address Mercury and The Purpose in the same instruction, for The Philosophical Mercury of Alchemy is its Essence; Transmutation. Beyond any history lesson, chemical reaction, or dangerous fumes, it is a system of Transmutation. The Base Transmutations in Alchemy require Mercury to begin.
The alchemists had many ways to approach the gaining of Understanding. One of these was the Mercurial component of learning; called the †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™¢¢¬‚¦‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦¢‚¬Å“Lunar Consciousness.†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬? This lucid, irrational and intuitive means of accessing imagery to provide access to †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™¢¢¬‚¦‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦¢‚¬Å“Hidden Thought†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬? is a large part of the process of Initiation in mysticism and religion. The Alchemist has many symbols for this †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™¢¢¬‚¦‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦¢‚¬Å“Blissful†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬? Agent, including the Queen, the Moon, the Holy Ghost, The Goddess and ultimately, the One Thing. Whenever the material involves lunar, nonlinear †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™¢¢¬‚¦‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦¢‚¬Å“right-brain†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬? activity like drawing, painting, symbols, meditations, and music, the Lunar Consciousness will be stimulated and respond. This is the component of Alchemy that is highly figured in the work of Carl Gustav Jung, and the field of Jungian Psychology.
Psychoanalyst Carl Gustav Jung noticed trends in the images and principles of alchemy surfacing in the dreams and compulsions of his patients and began a lifelong study of the subject, which is in many ways definitive proof of his achievements. He concluded that alchemical images explain the archetypal roots of the modern mind and underscores a process of transformation leading to the integration of the personality. This is facilitated by the Lunar Consciousness.
Symbolism of Philosophical Mercury:
The Queen symbolizes woman, lunar consciousness, The Moon and Mercury. The Queen is naked during the early stages but regains her royal robes at the end of her transformation. The Queen united with the King is the operation of Conjunction.
The Serpent Upon the Brow symbolized the Lunar consciousness in regards to higher octaves of thought, as pure expressions of being.
The Moon symbolized the Mutability of Mercury, present in its response to Heat, as analogous to the waxing and waning of the moon. Thus, the Silver moon is a reference to mercury, and not silver.

Thank you for the recap of one of my prior lessons... /:D" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt=":D" /> always nice to read and remember, as well as learn something new...CG Jung is one of my favorite philosophers/psychologists, I should have known he would be interested in alchemical principles...
I had to take my time and read this, thus the long hiatus...A nice, hot cup of my favorite java and the silence of the night helped this sink in tremendously...
Thanks again...

It seems that it is a cross-cultural thing to interpret and explain physical processes as spiritual manifestations and interactions (like the Australian Aborigine tribes Dreamtime stories).

so true, and yet why should it not when matter is but, essentially, a different *octave* of energy?

QUOTE(raum)so true, and yet why should it not when matter is but, essentially, a different *octave* of energy?
you mean energy and matter are different forms of the same thing? :?:
electricity and magnetism are different forms of the same thing.
p.s. why did you write "chaplet" rather than "chapter"?
