I thought it would be fun it discuss the Seven Souls.
The premier of the last season of the Sopranos started last weekend, and it opened with William S. Burroughs reading the Seven Souls. Here's the piece:
"The ancient Egyptians postulated seven souls, Top soul, and the first to leave at the moment of death, is Ren, the Secret Name. This corresponds to my Director, He directs the film of your life from conception to death. The Secret Name is the title of your film. When you die, that's where Ren came in. Second soul, and second one off the sinking ship, is Sekem: Energy, Power, Light The Director gives the orders, Sekem presses the right buttons. Number three is Khu, the Guardian Angel. He, she, or it is third man out . . . depicted as flying away across a full moon, a bird with luminous wings and head of light. Sort of thing you might see on a screen in an Indian restaurant in Panama. The Khu is responsible for the subject and can be injured in his defense- but not permanently, since the first three souls are eternal. They go beck to Heaven for another vessel.
The four remaining souls must take their chances with the subject in the Land of the Dead. Number four is Ba, the heart, often treacherous. This is a hawk's body with your face on it, shrunk down to the size of a fist. Many a hero has been brought down, like Samson, by a perfidious Ba. Number five is Ka, the Double, most closely associated with the subject. The Ka, which usually reaches adolescence at the time of bodily death, is the only reliable guide through the Land of the Dead to the western Lands. Number six is Khaibit, the Shadow, Memory, your whole past conditioning from this and other lives. Number seven is Sekhu, the Remains."
Let the picking begin... What does each soul mean? What does each soul represent? Are the souls present in your life? Do you believe in the seven souls? Etc...

The Seven Souls
The ancient Egyptians postulated seven souls, Top soul, and the first to leave at the moment of death, is Ren, the Secret Name. This corresponds to my Director, He directs the film of your life from conception to death. The Secret Name is the title of your film. When you die, that's where Ren came in.
I think that this is the part of you that iis most like God, the idea you have of God, whether you believe in him or not...
Second soul, and second one off the sinking ship, is Sekem: Energy, Power, Light The Director gives the orders, Sekem presses the right buttons.
This is your God given will...In the name of El (aleph lamed), one of God's many names, there is Ox, and there is Ox-Goad, if Ren is the Ox, Sekem is the Ox Goad...
This is your will in motion...Your innate instincts, knowledge, behavoir, being...The direct by product of the Ren and the Sekem..It is the sound that a whip makes when it is cracked, the result of a head on collision, the motive in locking eyes with someone beautiful...
The four remaining souls must take their chances with the subject in the Land of the Dead.
Number four is Ba, the heart, often treacherous. This is a hawk's body with your face on it, shrunk down to the size of a fist. Many a hero has been brought down, like Samson, by a perfidious Ba.
This is the trait most would associate to the heart, your passions and pride...
Number five is Ka, the Double, most closely associated with the subject. The Ka, which usually reaches adolescence at the time of bodily death, is the only reliable guide through the Land of the Dead to the western Lands.
If I may quote the ideals in the matrix, this is your "residual self image"...A pure, focused, and concentrated entity...
Number six is Khaibit, the Shadow, Memory, your whole past conditioning from this and other lives.
This is your "little black box" a running registry of all the things you've done, your recorded history, so to speak...In the journey through the land of the dead, this is your pass, your luggage...
Number seven is Sekhu, the Remains.
The vessel that contains the other 6 souls while you are on the earth realm...
Very cool topic...

Ren, the Secret Name - This is fundamentally the same as the "Hidden name" in the stone in Revelations, which is given of Iesu to John, in the cavern sacred to the worship of the Moon. This is the word which rests on the tongue of Thoth (pronpounced T-oh-T), the root of the word "thought". Thoth is Metatron, the being about the throne of God, who is called the Mouth of God. The Cresent moon was the beak of Thoth as the ibis bird, in his form Dejuti (sometimes spelled Tahuti). He was the author of the book of the Dead, called the Papyrii of Ani. This is fundamentally, the essential idea found in Anglicism as the "Angel of Thy Profession." - That is to say, the messenger to convey the essential divine nature inherited from the universal Creator. Your entire life is but a facet of its True message, which encompasses all phenomenon and experience.
The entire Corpus Hermeticum teaches this well. it is the story of Hermes Trismegistus, who attains the name of Nous, the spirit which reveals to him the Infinite, symmetrical, amorphous nature of the Universe. Study this book, for in it is Wisdom.
Sekem, The Shining: Sekem is the consort of the Ren, and takes direction from the Mouth of Re (i.e. Thoth) as though a loyal and servient wife. Even still, her (yes HER) true nature is unbridled and wanton. she is the harlot, brought under the direction of the Ren. Not the director of the light, but the very expansive duplicitious nature of light itself. in full extension, she is all the world of the Light. In concentration, she is the dancing flame of true spiritual lust. With proper discipline and willpower and guidance from the Ren, she is as a ravenous beast, eating away the inquity of men. Her name is Sek-emet, (sometimes spelled Sekhmet). She is the Mother of Truth. Therefore, as Thoth (Thought) is husband, so is his wife Se-Sheta (Secret, or Mystery). In Judiasm, she is the Shekinah, the flashing fire of God's love which dances upon the world, destroying men and delighting in her creation. it is for this reason, that the Great Mystery is the ruin of all Men, and often comes in the form of his help meet, Woman. It is for this reason that is is said Sesheta is in the Hat of Thoth, and under the feet of men. Thus is her nature all Matter. When Sekem is pacified, she is dedicated as the Bride of Hoor - A-Hat-Hoor, or Hathor (Nature). The Rites of Mystery are by invitation only.
Khu, the Star. The Khu is as a bird swimming in the ocean of the vault of Nu. (S)he is the exact quality that is uniquely yours, defined neither by male nor female. This is the Divine Hermaphodite - The Child of the Ren and Sekem, the Child of Thoth and Sesheta. That child's name is Ma'at Ma'at. She is the True Truth. The Absolute one can hope to aspire. In a perfected state, this is the consciousness one achieves and submits to, and understands as being the root of personal identity, existing past the terms of one's current consciousness, but distinct from the Infinite being. it is this being which weeps and rends its wings if your heart is found heavier than a feather in the Hall of Ma'at Ma'at, where your are judged by Anpu, as Thoth records the verdict.
These three are the basis of the Hall of Judgement in the House of Ma'at Ma'at. Thoth is the Librarian, Sekem is the architect of the Temple, and Khu is the body of knowledge.
Ba, the Heart, Prior to popular belief this is the "Heart as the core, the essential self, that is the child of your Khu; just as all of your children are the Children of your Ba. it is for this reason, one must purify their heart before they have a child. The Ba is the genetic tendencies which define your heritage. It is not just the bad, and the strength of the Ba is exercised even as a man exercises discretion. if the heart is heavier than a feather, it cannot stay aloft long, and is devoured by the beast at the bottom of the nile. If instead the heart is kept light, the wings can carry it to the far reaches of the afterlife, and (it is said) it will grow into a Khu. The lighter it is, the less it looks like you, Thus the more human looking your ba, the heavier it is. This is the attachment to your idea of yourself. A way to lighten your heart is to beat on your chest. This is revealed by Bes Na-Maut, and is the reason the apes beat their chests on the banks of the nile twhen they see the sun ascend in the skies., in hopes to make them light enough to be allowed immortality..
Ka, the Reflective Image, The Ka, is a extension of yourself, and is as yourself as you see yourself in Dreams, is the only reliable guide through the Land of the Dead to the western Lands. When you Die, you meet the Ka as the child of Asar, Anpu (Jackal). He is younger than Hoor, It is for this reason he is called Anu-bis (little one). He appears as a reflective image of the self, but when he is moving, he appears as a kem basti (black beast), most often depicted as a cat or a Jackal.
These two, Kha-Ba, are the Khabs, and reside in the khu - as the microcosmic self within the macrocosmic self.
Khaibit, the Hiding of the Light- This is the midnight of the path of the sun. The rolling of the dung beetle egg. Not all of the beetle's eggs hatch. There is a marriage in this, an Alchemical means of using this to carry on consciouness from one life to another to not be confined nor move to the afterlife, and only certain ones are allowed to do so. all fo the other eggs die and the land grows fertile with their demise. Those who hatch are they are willing to serve as servants in this world, for they know they are destined to reign in the next. Those so chosen, have another soul, at this same level. This is the secret part of the soul that only true Priests, Priestesses, Prophets (chosen not by office or title) can cultivate as their own through Heka (magic). It's name is "The Reward of Service." - and it is known as the "Brilliance."
Sekhu, the Husk. This is the part of the self which is preserved, and if disturbed can cause the spirit to stir and become as an abomination to the cycle of the sun.
A good model, and if you read some of my other posts in consideration of this topic, you may find it more valuable. Particularly the subject of Vitriol may be a good place to start... /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />
