sidenote: I met someone from Southern Sudan yesterday. He came here and got his PhD in chemistry. Very cool guy, and I hope we can hang out more.
He explained the situation at Darfur to me, from a Sudanese perspective. It was so completely clear. Very different than what minimal coverage you see in the media. We really don't understand it at all in this country.
My brain was literally jolted in reaction when he revealed he was a Catholic from birth, and his native language is Arabic. I had never heard that before.
His hometown was completely destroyed by state-sponsored terrorism for the oil rights being claimed by the Muslim , and they moved to Egypt. Then he moved to America in like 1995, and now he is studying to be a lawyer, after being a chemist for a while. His field is going to be intellectual property law, in the pharmaceutical industry.
And to me, he is a smart man.
