Microsoft admits Vista failure

By Charlie Demerjian in Beijing: Saturday 21 April 2007, 12:20
WITH TWO OVERLAPPING events, Microsoft admitted what we have been saying all along, Vista, aka Windows Me Two (Me II), is a joke that no one wants.

It did two unprecedented things this week that frankly stunned us.

Dell announced that it would be offering XP again on home PCs. The second that Vista came out, Microsoft makes it very hard for you to sell anything other than Me II. It can't do this on the business side because it would be laughed out the door, but for the walking sheep class, well, you take what you are shovelled.

Dell brings back XP on home systems

By Ina Fried

Amid significant customer demand, the computer maker said on Thursday that it has returned to offering the older Windows version as an option on some of its consumer PCs.

Like most computer makers, Dell switched nearly entirely to Vista-based systems following Microsoft's mainstream launch of the operating system in January. However, the company said its customers have been asking for XP as part of its IdeaStorm project, which asks customers to help the company come up with product ideas.

This past week or so I've been using Vista some more. Right now I have XP SP2 in my first partition (20Gig), Vista Ultimate 32 in the second partition (20Gig) and an extended partition for my files and whatnot. I just boot up whatever OS I feel like using.

Vista is fine for everything EXCEPT:
1) Processor intensive tasks: Things like 3D rendering and video processing really take a performance hit. I have tweaked everything I can and still can't seem to get performance on par with XP.

2) Games and 3D applications: Again there are performance hits and crashes. Probably more likely driver related. How long will this go on though?

3) Lack of drivers for a lot of hardware: Printers, scanners, gamepads, TV tuners all lack drivers for this OS still.

I have managed to get pretty much all video and music files playable, one way or the other. Office stuff and internet works fine.

The thing that annoys me a fair bit is how Vista thrashes the hard disk. I have 1 gig ram and Vista is consistently doing something with the HDD. Another aspect I've discovered is Vista seems to generate a fair bit of internet activity at startup - ? phoning home ? who knows?

Sure Vista looks visually more appealing but I haven't found anything else it does better than XP. On a side note, Ubuntu Fiesty Fawn is looking good.

I can think of one HUGE reason why you shouldn't have Vista.......

1. You can't have voice during Yahoo cam whore nights with g00ber and Witchy.

Well, I must be in RARE air, cause I honestly have very little reason, other than the 4 in goob's signautre to go back to XP, lol...And I'm using Vista Ultimate, which may be a different experience than what others may have had...

Plus, I've been around for a bit, long enough to remember the launch of Windows 95...98...Me...XP...And shit was talked about all of them except 2000, which I still herald as a masterpiece...I would rather work with what Vista is offering than to head back to XP...
