I happened to stumble across a quote from Matrix Reloaded quoting the movie .. Neo: But if you already know, how can I make a choice?
The Oracle: Because you didn't come here to make the choice, you've already made it. You're here to try to understand *why* you made it. I thought you'd have figured that out by now.

We either subconsciously or unconsciously make the choice already ... we're here to understand why we made it, and it leads to Causality .. cause and effect.

Now here's something else ... suppose one mundane choice today leads to a catastrophic event somewhere down the road ... the butterfly effect.

There is no action without consequence .. no cause without an effect .. even if you choose nothing .. you have still chosen something.
