I'm down for this, I think it's going to be epic...

Here's a link to the things we know so far about the film:

I. on the other hand, am not so hot for this at all. From all reports, the people behind it, Director JJ Abrams & the various producers can't decide on a firm direction to take the series. They've made it clear that they won't be doing the popular Thrawn trilogy from the kickass books by Timothy Zahn, which is what the hardcore fans want and deem a logical next step. I say reboot it with an alternate timeline ala 2009's Star Trek, that way we can have the recast characters we love having new & divergent adventures while not being slavish to what came before.

I'm relatively relieved that the upcoming Star Wars movie(s) won't be based on the Thrawn trilogy, simply because they would — in various ways — mess it up. Thrawn would be foppish; the Noghri would be snarling caricatures; et cetera ad nauseum.

(I've started listening to the audiobook of the Heir to the Empire 20th Anniversary Edition, and I reckon it's the closest thing one could reasonably hope for as far as a properly done movie based on the Thrawn trilogy. It's not even an actual radio drama with a full cast; but the reader, Marc Thompson, is so good at giving each character a distinctive and fitting voice that it's a delight to listen to. On top of that, they slip in bits of appropriate music here and there along with frequent subtle ambient sounds and other sound effects that it's sort of like a cast-of-one radio drama. There were times in the course of listening to it that I got such a keen feeling of boyish delighted excitement that it was as if I were watching it in cinematic form! Highly recommended for anyone who likes the Thrawn trilogy.)

I'd be really surprised if the upcoming Star Wars movie(s) were based on any of the existing novels. Given that there's no rule that they'd have to base the script on an existing novel/series, I reckon it's not unreasonable to presume enough ego on the part of Abrams and the screenwriter(s) that they would come up with their own story. Still, I'm curious what story they'll come up with in the course of in effect deeming all previous stories not good enough. I'm inclined to assume they'll reboot it. (After all, hasn't Hollywood been practically relying on reboots and sequels for nearly a decade now?) I expect that the more I find out about the movie(s), the more I'll be thinking/saying "Wait, what?(!)" about elements/aspects thereof.

I have never read any of the SW novels, and barely any of the comics, only those based loosely around the characters from the film...Although, I really do enjoy the films they released around the Old Republic video game...Those kinds of stories would make me happy to see on the big screen...

As long as light sabers are flashing and the special effects are on point, I don't really care about the stories...Star Wars for me has always been more about me putting myself in the space than watching and caring about the others so much...

Every Halloween is the Halloween I go 100 and get my costume together, custom made light saber and all... :)

I think what I dread most about picking up where Jedi left off so many years ago is how fucking terrible Ford Hamill and Fisher look in their old age. It was downright painful watching Ford play Indy again in the last Indy Jones movie so to see them back on screen looking like rejects from the post office is just going to depress me. Plus no Vader which in my opinion was the worst part of the prequels...it's gonna be tough man...it's just gonna be tough.

^HAHAHAHA. I co-sign what DL1 said. No Vader (as we knew him in the original trilogy) & Georgie screwed the pooch when he unquestionably killed off Darth Maul by having Obi-Wan chop him into Skittles (so much badass potential there all wasted).

The Phantom Menace is oddly a closer homage of the Fortress than Episode IV, but overall it's weaker.

The Expanded Universe has gotten so huge I'm not sure it would be feasible to try and cover it.

I heard they've already bugun filming even though they haven't even finished casting half the leads. Sounds ominous.
